  • Not today anymore. Social-media and the state-of-stupid of the web inhibit that. The masses don’t even know what to protest for or against. And without MASSIVE numbers you’d achieve nothing. Someone just needs to throw enough moneyz at the problem (or pay thousands to flood the net with “I love our overlords because XYZ”) until it’s gone.

It was hard to topple a king some 100yrs ago, but today? We don’t even know our kings anymore. Besides those few media-clown-babies that so desperately crave attention to fill a bottomless void of darkness inside them.

  • Your arguments are all valid and fine, wouldn’t argue with them. BUT understanding the underlying reasons doesn’t really change the fact and my point.

I can empathise with speeders, murderers, scammers and whatever. But know why someone does something, or even truly empathizing with it, doesn’t change the fact that it’s bad. I could understand a society of murderers and their reasons for murdering. But they’d still destroy their society.

And sadly I really see no way for the government (any gov anywhere) to really pull the rudder. Capitalism just won. And, as you already stated, their goals align excellently with the average Joe/Jane having no clue about the stuff that’s thrown in their faces and are worked to death so that’ll never change.

  • Yeah sure, government shall intervene. But…i can probably expect more from anyone else.

And no,I didn’t imply everyone should be expert at everything. That is beyond impossible, even for fractions of fractions of things. But. If you wanna drive a car, you’re forced to learn a shitton and pay like 2k € to be allowed to do so. One of the reasons is safety for others.

If I had no clue about e.g. doorbells, I would ask a pro I know or search the net or whatever. At least the absolute basics of it. Even setting the pure curiosity aside, just to know what the heck I’m getting at. Admitted, I might have much more spare time than the regular Jane or Joe, but I’d still do that if I had to work. Just less intensive.

But yes, this mixture of apathy and ignorance is the leading reason why the internet sucks so much nowadays then 30 or even just 20yrs ago. The majority of absolutely clueless people not knowing how they get fucked and where to draw a line. Sure, to some it’s just a tool they don’t need to know shit about to use it. No judging. BUT that doesn’t change the fact.

  • Why do I need the footage offsite? Because the burglar might’ve stolen the server/raspberry? I actually have my server storage hidden, if that would even be on the radar of a thief, which I really doubt.

But even if, an encrypted storage of your own choosing still beats random access by who-the-fuck-even-knows.

OK, granted, your 19-moneyz-solution is financially hard to beat, and probably no Chinese really gives a rats ass about your data. But even the thought that some random cloud-admin might just take a peek out of boredom…ugh. But OK, I’m a very private person.

A proper solution that does not suck probably costs a bit more than a ring (dunno what they cost though), but if one owns a house, one probably has a few spare hundreds or thousands for a secure surveillance.

  • Besides that I would trust a Chinese cloud way more than a murican one (I’m non-US), this really is a lazy excuse. This apathy paired with ignorance or being technically challenged is the main reason dystopian shit like ring even sells at all. Or all those silly “smart” assistants like Alexa.

Phrases like “renewing my subscription” in context of a fucking doorbell itself sounds so absurd to me.

E.g. A raspberry (or the likes) with some run-of-the-mill ip-cam, some wifi-doorbell and AgentDVR would do the same for even less moneyz. And just for you, not the whole world. Wouldn’t take more than some hours of setup.

  • See my other comment, this “drawback” is just based on missing knowledge. It’s absolutely the same as with torrents. If you are on public trackers/search-engines you’re fucked with the absolute mainstream-stuff. On private trackers you find what you need. Same with usenet. Lots of private trackers (at least in my native tongue, but most likely in many other tongues too) that deal with local stuff. I never not found anything except some very rare cases (in which torrent, debrid or even group-FPTs didn’t help either, it was just not available at all)

As you said: if you know what you’re doing…applies to everything :)

  • As said, if one does not understand a medium, it’s not the medium’s fault. Same as with torrent, if you need niche-stuff like localized dubs, you’d need local forums/sites for that. Same as with private torrent-trackers. I’m not a native-tongue either, but if i want localized or foreign stuff, there are at least 3 sites where i always find the stuff. It’s just not a simple “enter name, wait, watch” anymore, just the same speed when actually downloading. I even have torrent as a low-priority fallback enabled. Didn’t trigger for years :) Also torrent’s full-speed vastly depends on age of torrents and how mainstream their content is. As if every torrent of the last decade on that tracker is shared with full-speed.

Anyhow, if you think torrent is superior, you’re surely entitled to your own opinion of course. As said, the less people that use the usenet, the better for its future.

  • Torrent sucks. Go for usenet. As long as it doesn’t really hit mainstream it’s far superior. Plus all the *arrs (sonarr etc) and you’re comfortably set. (Though they work fine with torrents too, if you prefer those for whichever reason)

I have a minimal maintenance-setup running for years now. Wanna see a show? Enter name, select quality, wait a few seconds, start first episode. Movie? Enter name, click download, wait a minute or more and watch. Same with music and subtitles and even fucking porn (who collects porn???).

Price? Not even 10 bucks a month (provider plus indexer). And I even could save, coz I use 3 indexers while one would suffice most of the time and I also pay monthly for emby (I like it and want to give back, beats the lifetime-payment)

  • Make all my tools again? I mean I have all the time in the world to pursue my hobbies but that’d be a good dent in time :-) With games it’s also about MODS. Even if the game might run, the mods mostly won’t. And I prefer mod-able games. Didn’t say it was Linux’ fault. It sure ain’t. Ok the shortcuts aren’t really an issue, that’s right.

And it’s not that I don’t KNOW Linux(es) and its benefits. As said, I am running numerous linux-machines. But just no UI. MS anti-consumer practices mostly don’t phase me either. The corporate versions of everything are way less hostile, pihole+firewall+strongly restrictive group-policies do the rest.

Linux would be greatest as the cost of one MS-Server-license alone could be a whole Xeon-Proxmox-machine running 50 linux-machines :)

No arguing with you. If I’d be just a reddit-surfing user that occasionally games a thing and does some office-stuff, there would be no reason at all for MS. I probably wouldn’t even notice the difference. But I would not even get drivers AND the controller-app for my Soundcard (creative x7 LE), and this one is VITAL. It’s not about putting time and effort into it, it’s just too many problems with no solutions for having not a tremendously great reward in the end. I would just tinker different things so that the shit does work.

  • I’m having ca 20 servers at home and the majority of those are linux. I love it. My main rig is still windows and will probably stay that way unless win12 won’t finally cure what pisses me off so damn much with 11. They won’t, obviously. But migration would be very hard. Most of my tools won’t run, most of my self made tools won’t run, most of my games won’t run, most 4 decades of internalization of shortcuts won’t cut it short anymore. And I won’t even start with the domain migration horrors as this one’s still MS. I would end up dual booting for eternity until I stop booting up one of the two.

So…my point is. I use the right tool for the right job.
