In the end the US will look like late stage USSR, with apparatchiks having to sign off everything, years of waiting time and mile long waiting lines to have a chance to get whatever the supermarket currently has in stock, and it’s never what you actually need, so most people have to use facebook marketplace to barter goods

It’s not just this Congress rolling over to expose their bellies. The Legislative has been ceding power to the Executive for several decades, Republican and Democrat alike. They seem to think this is OK as their guy will get the power.

Having said that, I’ve never seen such cowardice. The Judicial is hanging in there, and yes, even this SCOTUS has voted against Trump. But our entire system is predicated on a 3-way balance of powers. Now that two of those powers are in absolute collusion, we’re collapsing.

The French will shut down their entire country if politicians try to increase the retirement age. Americans witness the collapse of democracy and do nothing.

We need to bring back the old “France Surrenders” meme and replace it with “Americans”.

Oh, they have upheld their promises - Project 2025’s agenda was in the open well in advance. Too many people actively voted for that - i can only guess at their reasons, but racism and hatred come to mind. And too many people stayed home when they shouldn’t have, closing their eyes to what was happening.

The other option is to boycott everything — bring the entire economy to a halt. Don’t show up to work, don’t shop, block the highways, stop paying taxes, etc. I guarantee the entire situation would be fixed in under a week.

Of course, this requires critical mass. And everyone is so conditioned to get to work on time and not endanger their next paycheck, that it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Things will have to get worse before they get better.

Yeah it’s too late. All the delusional gun-slinging second-amendment-spoiting idiots can think they can overthrow a government somehow.

The last chance to stop this was 13th of July last year.

Gun nuts simply don’t talk that way, let alone believe it. You do not have a cute talking point, you have a fabricated talking point. You have a picture of gun owners that only exists in liberal echo chambers. I invite you to hop on YouTube and see what we actually discuss and believe. Warning: It’ll probably be as boring as paste to most.

If we’re going by what the utterly fringe, utterly unserious nuts talk about? I can find fruitcakes spouting any nonsense you like, any topic. Give me a few minutes with a search engine.

What we can do is defend our families, neighbors and ourselves when ICE comes knocking. The fact that so many of us have guns is a massive deterrent. Notice ICE isn’t raiding places where people are well armed?

Think the cops and fascists (I repeat myself) are bad now? How do you think they would act if they knew they could kick down any door with no danger to themselves? You might notice how well fucking behaved they are when citizens are openly armed at a protest. Suddenly they just want everything peaceable. Aww, aren’t they sweet?

I heard that argument so often that the second amendment is there to overthrow tyrannical governments and I heard that from the people claiming that they need guns for that explicit purpose. For work reasons I have quite a bit to do with people from the mountain west and that’s a very common talking point there.

What we can do is defend our families, neighbors and ourselves when ICE comes knocking.

That’s seriously even more whack than thinking a bunch of gun nuts could overthrow the government with a “well regulated militia”.

When you start shooting at ICE, you get another Waco massacre.

Look at any (and I repeat ANY) other example of a country sliding into fascism. Name even one where owning a gun and “defending” yourself or your family lead to anything but all of them laying dead on the floor.

When the right wing dictatorship has safely grabbed full power, they are very likely to eventually take everyone’s guns away just because they can. They will suddenly start telling everyone that we have always been at war with East Asia and you better be a team player. And all the conservatives who have been conditioned to chase the Party Line in goose step formation and forfeit their previous principles will fall in line just like they always do. And within a few years 99% of everyone’s guns will be gone except for the regime.

It’s easy for old people to be short-sighted. They don’t have to take responsibility for fucking things up in the long term, because they’ll be dead.

Stable governments should elect people that have a reason to plan long term.

Somewhere in there, Ars should have noted that this does not mean literally ALL grants, but all federal grants as defined in 2 CFR 200.1 (which isn’t to say they won’t change that definition).
