VC financed social media at the start of its enshittification journey. Started interesting with open protocol but seems it has no ambitions of being open.

Glorified network janitor. Perpetual blueteam botherer. Friendly neighborhood cyberman. Constantly regressing toward the mean. Slowly regarding silent things.

Brave has a good marketing team.
As he stated, the service is scaled for the heyday of twitter migration with headroom to spare. Naturally the base infra is going to cost quite a bit.
He’s probably sized to run 5-6 times the capacity he needs at the moment.
People see social media and other things like e-mail and video content as free services.
They just want to join and get on with their lives. Most “normies” don’t really care about being served ads or being tracked. If you tell them about the surveillance industry behind the scenes they just shrug and keep scrolling their Insta feeds and clicking their youtube videos. Even people who complain about ads seem to be incapable of action if you suggest they install ad-blocker.
The people who understand or care about the problem are the ones who might donate, but not all of them. It’s a subset or an subset.
As Jerry says, the donation economy would not be sustainable if the Fediverse was the size of Facebook. Unfortunately that has more to do with human psyche than actual technical merits of ActivityPub or the Fediverse.
And then the game wouldn’t work.
It doesn’t have to be open source. There’s plenty of binary firmware and drivers around.
Well you’ll hate to hear who contributes most to the linux kernel in that case…
If it’s for work, I’d suggest using whatever works for you best. Sounds incredibly frustrating so I don’t know why’d you be so set on ditching windows. Use the tools that work for you. Having said that, I’ve been running Linux since early 0.99 kernels and Debian since 1.3 and stability is really unmatched these days.
Your screen flicker issues with browser sound like hardware acceleration related bugs and I’d hazard a quess that random freezes and reboots have something to do with graphics drivers as well. But of course it’s impossible to tell without logs, which you didn’t provide.
I use Firefox on my Android to access Bluesky. It’s much better than their official app, because Bluesky notifications are hell on earth.
All of them have really bad audio and as such, they’re completely useless.
Enterprise antivirus products have had PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) category forever. Seems its categorized as “HackTool” so not malware.
The obvious recommendation is Gentoo stage1 tarball running in Windows Linux Subsystem.
(on a serious note: whatever you’re running on your daily driver)
The Swedish Social Democratic party (supposedly staunchly left wing) are the ones behind Chat Control 2.0. So just voting for left is not a guarantee we actually get sane MPs in the parliament.
What else am I missing?
Large scale manufacturers pre-installing Linux? Readily available multi-language support for home users? Coherent UI regardless of computer and distro underneath. Billions on lobbying money spent on politicians for favorable policy crafting? Billions spent on marketing campaigns to actually sell the idea to the masses who simply don’t care any of your points (or any technical reasons, privacy or anything else that might be top of mind of the current Linux userbase).
I’d say Linux has a good chance of capturing 5-6% of the market in the coming years if lucky (I believe we’re somewhere around 4% at the moment), unless one of the big tech monopolies decides to start throwing money into it (Like Google did with Android)
The only AI function I could see myself using is one that would summarize 15 minute youtube videos into coherent readable text in blog format. That would be nice. Especially when they’re posted like this, just links without much context.
I thought it was funny as well. Sometimes FOSS communities are so very uptight, we should relax a bit.
Yeah, well just go ahead and see if it works for you now. I doubt much has changed, but some bits are probably more polished these days.
Most distros support some kind of LiveCD, so you can try it out without having to reinstall your machine, it’s painless and quick to evaluate before you take the plunge.

A quick search reveals this. Might be helpful. https://davejansen.com/asus-zenbook-duo-and-fedora-linux/
I guess it’s time to update uBlock Origin lists.
I don’t have Threads or follow anyone from there but sounds a bit… complicated?
