  • Not op but here for info of similar situation I’ve thought about doing. So

    • how many houses

    Between 3-5

    • how far are they apart (latency)

Different towns for 1-3 houses and same road for 3 houses, including mine where NAS would be. So im assuming this is some cloud sharing thing but im looking to host it and not use Google photos anymore.

    • what is their internet connection like?

Everyone has high speed i think. 1gb/s I think.

    • up/downstream?

Always pee downstream. Idk what this is asking. Sorry

    • Static IP? Is it stable?

Yes to both but would like it to be accessible on mobile devices too.

    • how are they supposed to access the data?

Just looking for info on what to learn so whatever you recommend lol

    • what kind of data is it, and what is the access pattern? Meaning, is it text files? Occasional pictures? Movies?

    Prolly 90% pictures & 10% video

    • how much data do you need in total (yours+others)

Shit idk enough to cover 3 families with multiple crotch fruit under 3 years old so 50,000TB+ range.

  • Are there any holes in the business plan that involves converting a dying social media platform thats already flooded with bots, troll farms and AI accounts into an entirely autonomous, isolated chamber of AI accounts, troll farm accounts and targeted ads? Zuck still fucks because of how horrible corporations are at applying KPI’s that show accurate ROIs between different advertising platforms. They have no clue if their ad blitz on Twitter was more successful than the investment in YouTube ads or if it was all a result of the current state of the economy at any point in time. It would take decades before the corporate whores finally pulled enough ads for Zuck to lose a buck. Im thinking Enron style minus the investing all employee retirements fraud.

  • It could just be karma whores expanding to other platforms than reddit. Idk if it’s still a thing but there was a time on reddit where people would steal posts, repost old top posts and aquire as much karma as they can on new accounts. Then sell the username to shills so they can push their agenda without looking like an obviously belligerent shill. They might try the same approach on lemmy before realizing karma doesn’t mean shit here which is where you see them deleting their accounts.

While possible I do think it’s a stretch, I also think it would be completely inefficient to try and train any LLM by feeding it data from lemmy. I wanna say the average number of active users on lemmy at any point is around 40,000. Compared to what google says reddit’s avg daily active users which is 52,200,000 users per day, it would seem like a complete waste of resources.

  • I mean yeah it’s a great idea but what if someone comes out with 6 minute abs?

    Step into my office.

    Why?

    Cuz you’re fucking fired!

-pooly paraphrased from one of my favorute scenes in Something About Mary

*bonus cuz noone asked, my favorite scene is when he asks his buddy how it’s been and his buddy says “you know each day is better than the next” without thinking it sounds like each day is great but he’s really saying is every day is worse and worse🤣

Pretty sure if you try and spell out the letters n, i, g, g,… and submit your comment or reply, it’s hardcoded on all platforms to remove the word. I’ve tried tellijg a story on the sync app for lemmy that involved a word that rhymes with maggot being said and even in quotes it only printed on the screen “removed” iirc. Context here implying it was the word someone said and not being used in the context of the comment. Not that it matters in a public forum but I point this out because the list we’re looking at is subreddit specific list of banned words that will trigger a bot to remove the automatically comment/delete the comment but still show a comment was made.

With that being said I have no fuckin clue what im looking at for the rest of the drama. In the image. It’s 4 boxes that could be read L to R from the top or it could be columns where top L is 1 bottom L is 2 top R is 3…

I think they didn’t like triggering their automated moderating system because what they felt was legitimate content. Little absurd to expect a reply from a real person mod in a span of a couple minutes tho.

  • Yeah but fucking still. I never would’ve imagined i was surrounded by more peers at any given Bills game than there were people accross the whole world contributing to Lemmy on avg. That’s sooooo fucking wild.

It’s also so crazy how in a stadium of 70,000 people from US and Canada I will see someone i know every piss or beer break. Whereas Lemmy is half that amd I am 100% positive I’ve never interacted or saw a comment/post on Lemmy from anyone I know. It’s just crazy to see the perspective of seeing the odds of being 1 out of 70,000 vs being 40,000 out of 6 or 7 billion. Obviously I’m intentionally ignoring all the variables at play for the real reason I know people at bills games vs lemmy but it’s still the quntificatikn that I found amazin.

  • I know 20 years ago Walmart was the face of corporate evil but hear me out. They have had 1 company MO and have never wavered from it, providing affordable goods at the lowest possible price to the consumer without any bells or whistles. No coupons, no buy 3 get 1 free, no sketchy pricing based on bullwhip procurement.

My message here is to encourage anyone like myself who is fed the fuck up with Amazon, Google and Microsoft shitting on every product they put out all rhe while cutting all operating costs from any semblance of customer support. I call Walmart every year to check how much .22 ammo they have around deer season to get my tags and the winters supply of varmint ammo in one trip. Every year I speak to a real person even if it rings for a hot minute.

For about the same price as Amazon prime, I have Walmart “prime” that comes with free delivery of not just market place shit but also same day grocery delivery. They dont spread themselves too thin like literally every single corporate giant out there. They were better equipped than Amazon to get into the market place industry and they are killing it. While every other shit head company is dumping billions into AI (Walmart might be too idk so take this with a grain of salt) Walmart invested billions into developing their drone delivery project.

Tldr: I encourage everyone who likes simple affordable products from a straight forward without any bullshit to give the Walmart equivalent of Amazon prime a shot.

Edit: One other perk point for uncle Wally is it isn’t a snake payment deal like 9.99/month of never ending monthly payment, maybe they do offer that now but when I signed up it was a single flat payment for 1 year and I get 2 emails letting me know it’s coming due for next year and the second being the invoice. They dont spam you, force apps on you, value your data more than you or the product you’re buying. Fuck i could keep going with how pleased I’ve been with Walmart.
