I know the big models will never really be able to achieve that in their current form, but am I reading too much crappy sci-fi to be paranoid that we should probably define what those are before it happens. Robot rights and such, because this is the mistake everyone makes.

The GrapheneOS team makes their hardware security requirments very clear.
Its up to the hardware manufactures to include a few additional components used for securely storing keys, so far Google Pixles are the only consistent line of products that do so.
I get that people dont want big corpo mega projects in their back yards, but I live in one of these areas and have a counterpoint to one of their reasons regarding the local power grid.
The pressure on the grid is a thing planned out by the local municipality and the power authority, you dont get to just build a data center, then ask for electricity. This article glosses over the volume of effort that goes into accomodating these buildings and not trip breakers on the grid. (This does not address the enviromental impact of that extra power generation, that is a valid complaint)
The extra power infrastructure improves service for normal residents in areas around these data centers because of the redundancy. The reason these areas are chosen is because of their easy access to multiple electricity providers. (And a low risk index according to FEMA, and proximity to each other, data centers like to cluster up to share the infrastructure)
The high use of the water table is a valid complaint, but the buildings being an eye-sore is, I feel, toeing the line to NIMBYism (people complain about windmills all the time because they look “bad”, data centers will usually try to look like a warehouse as part of their physical security). The capalists will allocate resources as they see fit, and thats just the reality these areas live in…
If nintendo’s price points are anything similar to Lenovo’s from last week, ~50$ US of that is from darth cheeto and his tarrifs.

Open registration is a flag in your config file. Its normally not there by default. Plus half the mobile apps do not support account creation pages of you have the flag turned on.
Room settings are what controls view/join roles from federated instances.

We believe in you, there are other write-ups and guides on how to get it working. Its was great learning expirence for VMs and Proxmox (thats what I did and it did make it harder, but I feel more confident when im cosplaying as a sys-admin)
This one is pretty close to whats needed, but go into it expecting each step to open a new tool/application that needs to be researched before you press enter. Also look up how to set it to a PSQL db before you start inviting users, it defaults to SQLite and that will cause problems eventually.

My nerds herd recently also set up a cluster of Matrix Synapse servers so we got our little “We have Telegram at home” set up. Getting non-tech people to accept that this is how to find me has been tricky without sounding like a digital prepper.
Note for Obsidian, there is a git plugin that can auto-push/pull from a repo. I put my repo on a server and have multiple devices use it as a sync feature (there is also a VPN to my home network involved). Not sure how well it works on the android app (its pure lazyness as to why I haven’t tried that yet…)
My last expirence with XMPP is very dated, my old groups in EvE online used it and it was perfect for its role as a sort of internet pager to summon the horde of nerds. Im aware there are many new related projects, discounting it seems a bit premature now, if you have any recomendations I would love to read their docs.
My concern is that I would have to pitch what ever project we landed on to a semi-technical group of gamers with a handful of admins to run things. (Trying to avoid a platform that gen-z would complain about, and they already roll their eyes at me when I mention spaceships and spreadsheets).

What methods/devices do you use to upload/sync the data? Other than a regular smart phone, were you able to use other GPS enabled devices like garmin or apple smart watches?
