Proton is basically magic. I’ve got 1960 games on steam and I have a chunk that are listed as ‘untested’ but less than 10 that are listed as incompatible. The games listed as untested also usually end up just working. You may have to mess with proton or winetricks sporadically, but even that is very rare in my experience. It is nearly always an issue in a multiplayer game with anti-cheat when it just doesn’t work.

It sounds like you’re getting into the keeping it running phase.

First, going back to your previous comment, self-hosting email is difficult. It’s not hard for a small provider to end up blacklisted and you’re probably kind of just done at that point and it will feel very unfair. I get that it’s a fun set of technical challenges, but you couldn’t pay me enough to help someone self-host email.

Second, guessing, but it sounds like you may be trying to expose your services directly and doing a lot to make that work which goes against what most would recommend for hosting your own services. Big companies don’t expose their intranet like that, follow their example. Almost every guide or system is going to warn against that. If you’re going to host more than one thing, highly recommend focusing on minimizing entry points and looking into a VPN-like solution for accessing most if not all of your services. Still spend time on securing your intranet, but most of your risk is going to come from how hard it is for people to get past the front door (or doors).

We already have that, the first problem is we have like a dozen of them, a few are even well supported. The second problem is that usually the technical knowledge required to set up the systems are still lower than the technical knowledge required to keep it running.

I agree that lemmy shouldn’t take it on itself, but I do think deeper integration into other foss systems is not a bad plan. Being able to integrate a matrix instance directly with a lemmy instance would be fancy and I think exploring stuff like that further could be the key to finally getting us beyond just seeking parity with reddit.

Stuff happens in life, people get that, but I don’t feel like it’s too much to ask for an update about what’s going on more than once every other month and while we appreciate him trying to handle everything, when he can’t, there needs to be some effort at creating a backup plan. And… then finally when people stepped up to offer to help him, he didn’t appreciate them, ignored their efforts and pushed them out (which is why we have mbin).

The head dev just kinda peaces out from time to time. Supposedly, he’s got a lot going on in his personal life, and he probably really does, but he’s also unwilling to hand over the reins or communicate or share, so the main instance just kinda died.

I know this won’t work for everyone, but I just quit playing games that don’t work or even from publishers that do shitty things and there’s still plenty of games out there. There’s a lot of shovelware out there, but there’s also a lot of good stuff out there.

Do you have any prospects in mind for a repairable phone? I’m of a similar mindset, but the premium on the existing ‘repairable’ phones out there is so high that I don’t feel like I can justify it.

I see where your head is at here, but it sounds like you’re focusing on containerized items. A lot of people are going to look at you real weird if you think of scaling down a container as equivalent to shutting down a server. We can all see where your mind is going and there is logic there, but it’s more akin to closing chrome when you’re not using it than it is to shutting down the computer running chrome.

Have you looked into specialized AI chips/accelerators at all if you really want to mess with it?

Way lower end than what you’re working with, but they have AI accelerator kits for something as small as a Raspberry Pi.

I don’t like some of the other decisions in Garuda, but it’s become hard to get away from it when even regular non-technical people who see it are like “Whoa, what is all that” and you literally just finished installing it and didn’t even change the wallpaper. It’s a very different feeling from what I’m used to with Linux and I’m into it.

As others have said, prices should be mostly stable, especially for big names, but you still might see a few small devs who were like “Oh shit, its the summer sale, we should add a discount” halfway through.

Most common for me was just not being able to do anything but look at the front page, couldn’t click on anything without errors.

I really want Kbin to succeed, but Ernest seems to see the project as something he checks on once every few months and then ignores, but he still seems to want to be the only one who gets to make decisions. I get that he has stuff going on in his life, but the solution to all these problem starts with communicating and working with the community, not disappearing for months at a time and refusing to work with the people who try to help him. You just can’t have a successful project with an approach like that.
