Here’s the thing, it kind of already has, the new AI push is related to smaller projects and AI agents like Claude Code and GitHub copilot integration. MCP’s are also starting to pick up some steam as a way to refine prompt engineering. The basic AI “bubble” popped already, what we’re seeing now is an odd arms race of smaller AI projects thanks to companies like Deepseek pushing the AI hosting costs so low that anyone can reasonably host and tweak their own LLMs without costing a fortune. It’s really an interesting thing to watch, but honestly I don’t think we’re going to see the major gains that the tech industry is trying to push anytime soon. Take any claims of AGI and OpenAI “breakthroughs” with a mountain of salt, because they will do anything to keep the hype up and drive up their stock prices. Sam Altman is a con man and nothing more, don’t believe what he says.

Love cachyOS, I don’t pay much attention to the claimed performance improvements. I just think it has some really good defaults and in-house tools for beginners that make navigating an Arch distro easier.

Latest mesa + plasma 6.1.1 = janky as well

Window dodging recently broke on me so I can’t dodge windows on any of the panels properly anymore, was working great on 6.1. Certain windows will cause the desktop to lock up and I can’t click on any windows or icons in the panel task manager. The global menu only works half the time now. I’m getting severe mouse cursor stuttering on a 120Hz display on the desktop, certain games running proton that were fine before have micro stutter. It’s been a pretty terrible experience on the AMD side recently.

I’ve looked at revolt and well, when I tried using it it was filled with less than reputable individuals. I don’t remember specifics but I remember noping the fuck off revolt real quick. If you want text chat, try matrix, if you want voice well, then idk what to say other than discord, team speak or guilded. Guilded is pretty cool, I actually like the client way better than discord but my friends all use discord and guilded isn’t a huge platform. It is backed by the Roblox company so you at least know it’s gonna be supported, but then again, it’s the Roblox company…

I wouldn’t say in the works, this is one person who’s a web developer posting on Reddit about an idea. In the works usually tells me they’re already working on the project, not trying to find people to help start it. GL to them I guess.

They rehash the same chip over and over again each generation with minimal gains, increase the power requirements and cut out third party oems like EVGA. Give it a couple generations and I would bet they’ll only be selling the 4080/90 equivalents in the future and let intel or amd have the midrange and low range market, freeing up manufacturing for their AI/ML hardware. Doesn’t matter if it’s conjecture, the writing is on the wall. People are choosing to ignore it even though the market is flooded with low end Nvidia cards made to look like their low and midrange offerings aren’t selling. It’s only a matter of time, the consumer graphics market is a second class citizen for Nvidia.

It’s true though…consumer graphics mean damn near nothing to them, their AI/ML profits shit all over your precious 4080’s and 4090’s in regards to straight profit for Nvidia.

I would keep in mind one thing with Nvidia. Their consumer GPU market is a drop in the bucket compared to their server, cloud and AI/ML markets. AMD dedicates real effort and resources to their hardware development and they don’t lock their features to their own platform. I’m still using a vega56 and haven’t really felt a need to upgrade because things like fsr just keep my card chugging along.

Currently have a 6a, the fingerprint sensor was garbage when I first got it but Google really did some work to improve it over the years. It’s not perfect but it works.

Come on now, that’s not just a Google problem and you know it, no need to shit on Google for something damn near every tech company does. Google does their fair share of shitty things, this isn’t really one of them.

While I liked Niagara for what it tries to do, it’s price for a launcher was steep, and Nova IMHO is not a good company to emulate. May I ask why the need to join the Google group?

Make it open source and don’t charge for a “premium” version when it’s fully released that will hamstring your capability if you don’t pay.

Very stock Android, but they use older hardware for these phones and it shows. I had a moto g power, at one point it had to install updates and when it rebooted it sat at a blank home screen for ten minutes before showing any icons. I ditched Android altogether and went iPhone, but I heard really good things about pixel phones, so I switched back and gave my old phones to my kids.

I’m all for defederating, but only until we know what their intentions are. I’m more worried about Mastodon than Lemmy, but still, that’s not the point. The only power any of us have is to file an official complaint with the FTC and make a distinct point, not just “I hate meta/Facebook and want them to go away” it has to be a logical complaint such as “their terms of service are overstepping their boundaries and taking ownership of data on competing platforms that they do not own to lock out competitors.” It’s really the only thing anyone in the US can do.

I would hate for the fediverse to die by zuck the cuck’s hand, but the sad truth is open source is the enemy of corporate platforms, and it’s encouraging enough that ActivityPub is enough of a threat to Meta that they’re willing to go to these measures to make sure their bottom line isn’t harmed. The real fucked up thing is their intention to farm other platforms users with their consent and that’s the real problem.

If you’re just using it to read, I would highly recommend selling it and getting an e-ink display. I have both a Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle fire 8 plus. I just can’t read books on the fire 8 anymore, the Paperwhite is so good. If you can’t stand Amazon then rakuten makes a really good e-ink readers with their kobos.

So me not wanting to upgrade my pixel 6a to a pixel 8 because it works just fine is a problem for the global Smartphone economy? Fuck these guys. I want hardware that lasts and doesn’t end up in a landfill. I don’t give a shit if these executives can’t buy a third yacht or another tennis court in their back yard, I’m going to stick with what works. The hypocrisy of these kinds of articles is disgusting at best and immoral at worst.

Part of the issue is that the biggest smartphone manufacturers are all sister companies to each other. Oppo, OnePlus, xaiomi, they’re all different companies under the same banner, so they’re bound to share hardware specs and manufacturing.

Personally I think nothing phone is the only phone brand that’s innovating on design with the candy bar style phone, but even that’s hard to justify. Samsung has been repeating the folding phone designs and refining them year after year and Google has been pretty lazy with the pixel phones in regards to hardware.

It’s a weird time for smartphones, can’t push more power without destroying batteries, can’t really innovate with batteries because we’ve hit a wall that only software can help mitigate. Not only that’s we all apparently want bigger and bigger phones, and the only way to realistically get that is with folding display tech, which again chews up battery power.
