  • I always hit “Factory Data Reset” before crossing a border, but now they aren’t just at (or nenar) borders.

Time to keep any data on a server, in a jurisdiction that tells the MAGAt motherfuckers where to stuff it.

Sadly hard to find a commercial service. Sync is in Canada, and they’re a compelte joke now that Carney is ruining the place. Tuta is in Germany, and they have AfD running a new Nazi takeover one chunk at a time. Proton is Switzerland which is good… For Citizens. Most of us aren’t Swiss, though.

Honestly we need someone to make a service like Proton, and put it in Iceland…

Which will be good, until that fuckwit Cheeto mistakes it for Greenland and invades.

  • I have always kept everything airgapped, the best security is isolation.

I download stuff to a tablet, with nothing of value or interest on it, dump it to the sd card, then move it to the offline systems with a USB card reader.

Even my servers (mostly ARM SBCs with one RISC-V) were set up to work over a wired offline network.

Also most of my pirated stuff is things I own that I yarred for the crack if it was more convenient than cracking it myself.

  • My ick comes from the centralized repositories, basically building app stores for Linux, and pushing them beyond a distro specific things that usually still have other options on top of the deb or rpm or whatever.

With them fiddling around trying to invade every bit of privacy and us just barely escaping the California law with no idea if it will hold out for future ones I think any centralized source is a liability and should be avoided.

Also, the systemd jackass throwing his own narcissit tech bro bullshit into it to bow down, lick the boot, and comply in advance is another real concern as most distros have moved to it from other init systems. There has to be enough fragmentation here for us to move away from fascist fuckery, and the ridiculous reliance on a single type of packaging isn’t good for being able to sidestep stupidity if/when it spread to the people in control of the codebase.

  • They have the sync option to update without downloading the whole package again, GearLevel does this, but that’s a flatpak, there are several more options as well or just manual updates. Some of them even update themselves, if you trust the packager. And given how easy it is for random people to dump unofficial ports on Flathub I would check who made them there as closely as I do for my AppImages.

No problem with Flathub, but FFS I wish so many projects would stop having all their releases and flatpaks or those damn snaps.

If you’re going to do just one format why not AppImage? It is portable, easy to use, multiple ways to sandbox it, and newer versions have the option to create their own home directory so the files created stay with the AppImage for use on portable drives or between users on a shared partition.
