Atomic distro sounds like an interesting way to avoid breakage due to admin/user mistakes, so it’s a good suggestion. But it doesn’t help much with bugs in new software releases.

So the best choice depends on what exactly caused instability in OP’s case.

Somewhat obvious tips to get a more stable experience:

• Use a distribution that favour stability over being on the bleeding edge. Like Debian stable, or another distribution that maintain LTS releases,
• Install software from the distribution’s official package repositories. Avoid third party packages and repos as much as possible. If you really need a third party repo, verify it’s compatible with your specific distro and has reputation for being well maintained,
• When you do see a problem, take time to troubleshoot and if necessary make a bug report with necessary information for developers to identify the problem, so there’s a better chance to see it fixed.
• If you use Linux in a professional settings, there is paid support available out there, in some cases this get you priority for bug fixes.

I wouldn’t assume it’s 100% malware. A portion, hopefully a small one, are legitimate apps that faced automated rejection with automatically generated reply citing a vague “policy-violation”. A few open-source apps wrote on their blog they gave up uploading to Google Play because of its disfunctional moderation. Some even gave up developing their app.

Yes, but many YouTube channels don’t have a RSS podcast equivalent. YouTube is somewhat of a walled garden, like Spotify is.

I don’t know. My ISP doesn’t know. And I won’t bother interacting with Google’s non-existing support.

My solution is moving away from YouTube whenever possible, for instance subscripting to podcast instead when a creator has a podcast with the same content.

YouTube has blocked a bunch of IP ranges, including residential ones, forcing people to use an account to watch videos. So self-hosting isn’t an option for everyone.

But yes, if the cost of getting access is to high for indie developers, then it make sense to avoid Google Drive. Creating and maintaining your own cloud sync service for a specific app may not be worth it, they should investigate integration with existing Google Drive competitors/alternatives.

Don’t waste time trying to reason them. If you’re not able and willing and sue them to enforce the GPL license, the company won’t care.

You should directly informe one of the organisations mentioned previously, they may have a lawyer and experience fighting this kind of fight.

Best you can do youself is collect evidence that they’re distributing modified GPL software, and write a precise description of the issue, to help these organisations kickstart their investigation into the GPL violation.
