You’re much better off either running it in a container that provides the ancient libraries it needs or running the Windows version through Proton. Otherwise, my understanding is that if you were to theoretically provide it everything it needed, you’d basically be downgrading your distro to a version from 2004.

The Proton approach is what I would try.

I think the weakest computer I’ve had Linux on was an original Xbox running DSL.

Go into the game’s settings in Steam and then set its compatibility to Proton Hotfix. You should then have the option to install it.

I don’t agree with the first half. I’ve upvoted comments mentioning Debian because it’s the one I would recommend, but it’s not my favorite and none of my daily drivers use it.

However, I agree with the second half. OP seems to be avoiding actually fixing the issue and is hoping that rolling the dice on another distro will fix at least the USB issue. Fixing the issue on OpenSUSE will likely guide them to learn something helpful along the way and they won’t need to re-setup everything else.

I don’t know if it’s more resource-efficient, but when I wanted to start using VMs for work, I knew VirtualBox would not be a viable choice (thanks to Oracle and their horrible licensing), so I chose GNOME Boxes and have been pretty happy with it. I didn’t do any tests so I can’t say for certain , but it doesn’t seem like the resource consumption is that much different.

Out of genuine curiosity, what is it missing? I have to use macOS on my Apple Silicon computers, so I haven’t tried out Asahi.

I use Pop!_OS on 2 machines daily with KDE Plasma and am happy with it. I use KDE Plasma because COSMIC is too GNOME-y for me. The only thing I liked better in COSMIC was the fractional scaling- that was way better than the options I have in KDE.

I agree that Linux Mint is closer to what the vocal Linux desktop community would like to see, but Ubuntu is anything but abandoned. Where I work, both my coworkers (excluding myself) and customers are either using RHEL or Ubuntu. That’s it. Sure, everyone on Lemmy and Reddit swears against Ubuntu and has no need for plain-RHEL, but a lot more of the non-vocal Linux community is using Ubuntu. I prefer Pop!_OS, but that’s besides the point.
