Thanks, that’s actually the one I’m using but I mistakenly called it “Android Pass” originally. I’ve edited my post now to reflect this correction. Unfortuantely, at least in the only 2 situations I’ve ever tried to use a wallet which was now twice in days, I was receiving emails from organisations, one with an auto club membership digital card and one with a ticket to an event, on both occasions, I was given a link to add to my google wallet or a link to add my apple wallet and neither link actually leads to a pkpass file or any downloadable file. In the case of one of them at least I saw it links to some unrelated company that I guess they teamed up with for distributing these passes called urban air ship. I assume if you go ahead an sign-in it eventually goes on to give you a pkpass file or something similar that a google wallet app deals with but I obviously wasn’t going to do that. I was wondering if there was any commonly known way to just get the pkpass file from links like those since both seemed to work in much the same way and I assume somewhere at the end of the hoops you jump through you get an actual file.

I think I’d be pretty pleased with that actually, so long as it’s on my local machine. That’s because I often find myself wanting to locate a particular email that is along certain lines, or on a certain topic, or involves an organisation’s name that kinda sounds similar to this one word but isn’t actually that word or things like “the email where they mention they’ve had a kid” but I can’t actually recall either what they called their child, or what gender they were, or when the email was received. Or actually, even better, in that last example “What’s Dave’s kid’s name again?” and just getting a 1 word, correct response, with the ability to open the email it found where this was mentioned for additional context if I want it. Or things like “how long has it been since we moved out of that house?” and instead of finding the earliest email I can on the topic of moving house and reading emails to surmise when we discussed leaving and then finding which one might have mentioned that actual date we moved out, I could just get an answer, in English again hopefully with a link to the email or emails that provided the rationale for how the answer was arrived at.

Often in those simpler search situations I mentioned where I just need to find a specific email, keyword searches don’t always cut it. I have an absolutely appalling memory so figuring out pertinent details to things happening now based on what was going on in my inbox at some point in the past are a very important way that I get by. If I could achieve this more easily by asking relatively vague, English language questions that will help direct search efforts that are being done for me would be really helpful. Sure, theoretically all existing means of filtering and searching email should eventually find me that message but they’d likely be more effort than just asking directly like you’d ask a person tasked with digging through a filing cabinet for you, and sometimes even after extensive filtering by all kinds of clues: date, senders, keywords, labels, subject lines, emails I remember around the same time that I can find; I just for whatever reason can NOT dig up that email only to discover it later when it’s too late to be useful to me anymore and get to see what obscure reason it was none of my clever search methods caught it…

Is there any progress towards marrying these different fediverse services together so I could use my Lemmy account on any of them? Is this a goal at all?

It does seem like it’d be pretty cool, though much rather them than me lol. I think shoving an rpi inside though would really betray the implicit spirit of the project. That would just be “can a raspberry pi run linux when I put in a plastic case shaped like a children’s toy?” The answer would pretty obviously be yes. People are saying the processor in it means it probably couldn’t run Linux which would make it a bit of a non-starter but there apparently other OSs that could be made to run on that kind of processor and that’d be cool to see.

I noticed a little folder icon had appeared just recently and that if I clicked it, it… listed all the tabs, so I guess that was the list all tabs button. I actually rather liked it but hadn’t yet trained myself in to the habit of using it. I hadn’t even noticed it’s now gone, but curiously it seems like for me it hasn’t really gone, so much as it’s become a down arrow icon rather than a folder. Sounds like this change is to make it optional, meaning it will otherwise stay there which tracks with my experience, but why has it become a down arrow now?

I guess if, as this person says, the intended use is made clear then presumably so long as the original logs from which the report was generated are retained then there shouldn’t really be an issue. Make your nice, digestible reports that normalise over a workday and give a more grand overview of progress, and if they smell a bit too rosy or you just sometimes need a more granular accounting of time then clients/bosses can request the original raw data from the contractor/employee. Maybe this software itself should include some ability to retain a log of the processing that was done so that the relationship between its generated reports and the source data can be more clearly audited if some kind of a trust issue arises.

The hope I guess would be that you make it clear that this is a more executive summary style of report that you’ve added as a courtesy because it’s more useful in context and that’s hopefully enough for whoever you’re reporting to but if they want more transparency or detail it’s all there for them too.

I’m using Element. Good to know about the threads thing. They didn’t work how I expected they would, I thought I’d be able to essentially do something similar to forum where I come up with a topic of discussion, name it and have a means of identifying all discussion within this topic as part of the thread, the way it works is kind of like that, but it’s more that something has to have first been said, and then you can reply to it in a thread thus essentially making it a thread. I kind of get it, it’s a bit like how emails work i that regard.

It looks like it would be hard to entice people to reply to things I ask in a thread since they have to think to click reply in thread and which message uttered as part of a topic should be considered the start of a thread is random and up to the reply-er so someone might pick something said much later in the conversation, and click ‘reply in thread’ to that thus splintering everything. Good to know there’s something at least. I kind of thought it might use something more akin to #hashtags so I could make my first statement intended to be part of a thread thus starting a thread and then anyone joining it later could easily slot in to the timeline of discussion by just using the hashtag. I see there’s a list of threads so hopefully people would use that, but it seems like a lot of hoping everyone employs best practice for the feature to really be useful.

This is what I find so odd about modern messaging systems being used in the manner that they’re used. I get that the immediacy of conversation is sometimes extremely helpful for discussing topics and I can understand why like minded people would then want to hang out together to have those conversations, but like, it’s also kind of flawed for this because of the ephemeral nature of conversation. That’s why I wondered if this flaw had been addressed through some forum-like features.

I believe while I was figuring this out I discovered one of rogue amoebas apps that I could use in conjunction with sound flower and I was nearly certain I had it, it was something to do with how Skype worked that sabotaged me, I couldn’t believe how stubbornly persistent Skype was despite how hard I tried to workaround it. I believe I was trying to make a single virtual sound device that combined my mic output with the system Audio so I could choose that as my microphone in Skype but SOMEHOW it was always able to fuck me over don’t remember how, only that I was extremely angry.

I tried to set this up on a mac using soundflower so I could share my screen with an edit project with the director during lockdown and still chat to them at the same time. Didn’t work for some frustrating reason relating to Skype.

The reduced wait time I think is the only real leg to stand on. It arguably doesn’t make sense to undermine theatre ticket sales by making it cheaper at home, although I’d argue that it should be that the theatre option is the premium option that should cost more while home streaming is the cheap option if you don’t want or need the theatre experience which should make it a complimentary income source to ticket sales not a threat to it but I guess they reckon they’ll make them both cost the same until the cinema run is over so they never make less than a full theatre ticket price until then.

I hate how things being convenient means they have to cost more. “Convenience fees” are such a crock. If it cost them more to offer the convenience over their usual service, but they don’t run video stores any more and this has arguably less overhead than the renting physical media business did so it should be cheaper for everyone and yet instead they contrive additional expense on top because they made it convenient.
