Oh yes, I have heard a lot of cases like this related to freenom. They deactivate domains that get traction and resell them at a premium (mostly to spammy ad networks that hoard domains).
Okay, so you will get a notification that there was a call but can’t really attend it. That’s still pretty neat!
Huh, I wonder if there are downvoting bots set up by trolls then…
Yes, it definitely seem underrated.
About the downvotes, this is not the first time that has happened. I have been repeatedly getting downvoted on some of the tech or related communities on Lemmy instances recently for completely innocuous comments. Since I am on kbin, they don’t impact me in anyway, but I have been puzzled about it. The only explanation I can come up with is something I wrote at some point offended someone and they are just down voting whatever post they see of mine with multiple accounts.
Not very familiar with using Matrix bridges, can they handle WhatsApp calls? (Not asking about Signal because I would like to keep using it)
Never thought of this possibility. This is really interesting.
Their daily active users declined by 82 percent from its peak https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/threads-user-base-has-plummeted-more-than-80-metas-app-ended-july-with-just-8-million-daily-active-users-/articleshow/102435552.cms
The number of users are just stabilising. This is expected after a sudden spike in users.
Everyone in that Telegram group, including her, needs help.
I use Firefox with ublock origin and haven’t seen it yet.
In my opinion, you should start out by joining one of the bigger instances. Once you are used to Mastodon, you may if you wish, move to a smaller server that is focused on your niche or your specific interests. But whichever instance you join, you can curate your timeline by following the right hashtags along with people.
Which device doesn’t run VLC?
Going to copy paste the response I made when this was posted in a different community:
When the Twitter migration happened, a lot of folks got overenthusiastic about the idea of the fediverse and started setting up their own Mastodon instances, despite having little to no experience with selfhosting before.
A lot of such instances have since shut down as they realised the amount of efforts that actually needs into hosting such a platform, especially instances with open registrations. However, a large number of them did survive and are now thriving.
Has the growth rate slowed? Sure, just like it is expected happen after a sudden influx. But it is false to say that Mastodon growth has stalled. Instead, the phrase I would use is ‘stabilized’. Mastodon growth has stabilized into a healthy level as user growth is now happening more organically. Some stats below:
12,808,214 accounts +217,864 in the last week
Stats on most active instances:

This will happen. A lot of people did this initially in Mastodon, but it just resulted in feeds getting spammed by reposts from Twitter and drowning out actual posts. Most such users just ended up getting blocked, and others stopped reposting blindly on the fear of getting blocked. My mastodon feed looks so much better without those annoying reposts.
This looks really cool!
You can customize the Firefox UI entirely by making modifications to userChrome.CSS.
And there are some really good addons for tab management in Firefox.
