Imagine buying a hardware, and the manufacturer holds it hostage and can brick it anytime, or it can ban you from all online activities, unless you use it as intended.
It just happens that intended use also maximises profit for them.
Fuck Nintendo sideways.
Time to update and check it out
I know its not the most ideal place, but FB marketplace where I live has lots of old PCs/Laptops for under 50 eur. I would probably start there personally.
First I thougt its just a prank by a bored social media intern, but it looks like the whole company is built on this insane absurd communication. It was a hilarious read :D
Sorry, I did not mean to attack you personally. Te high-end GPU market is clearly NVidia territory and in my opinion so few people are using theses cards with Linux, the issues related with them might not get as much attention as the more mainstream stuff. No suprised AMD not even trying to compete with these cards and want to stay in mid-high range.
You are like th 0.01% of gamers dude. 4K ray tracing is borderline luxury category.
Welcome to the club :D I did the same thing last summer and also switched to Mint and never looked back. So basically Im a fellow newbie. It was the best decision as everything just works minus the windows shenanigans.
Even gaming is almost perfect (apart from the occasional tinkering here and there) its more than great. All my games work great, some better than under win.
Im even in the middle of building my new gaming PC exclusively for Linux in mind.
As I have to use win 11 for work (work laptop) I can see switching was the right decision as every update makes it more annoying and bloated.
Building a new PC soon and really thinking about to try out one of the more gaming focused distros, so happy to see there will be multiple to choose from. I’m on Mint for a while now and had very good experience with gaming and performance. Normally I would not have time to do the whole “distro hop” thing, but damn I just might :)
My wifes old laptop died and I got an ancient gaming laptop from a colleague and put Linux Mint on it. It works great.
She uses it for studying and some light gaming (Stardew Valley). It just works. She never used Linux before but had zero issues using it and she even said its just like Windows, just faster.
Recently switched to Linux Mint.
There are really just a couple extra steps to set up Linux for gaming. In my opinion it takes less time to install proton ge, Lurtis or Heroic than downloading and installing GPU drivers on windows:)
For 90% I just download the game via Steam and enable Proton GE (if its not native) and play it straight away.
In some cases if Im not happy with performance I check the Proton DB page to see what settings/proton version/launch commands other people are using and that solves it 9 out of 10.
If you have GoG, Uplay, Epic, etc games just use Heroic or Lutris. Again, first time setup can take 20-30 min using a video tutorial, but after that its all good to go.
Sorry, I have a Radeon rx580, no experience with Nvidia yet.
Thank you. I will look into it!
Unless you want to play recent multiplayer AAA titles your steam library will work with little to no tinkering.
There is a website Check My Deck, which is originally designed for steam deck users, but linking your steam library you can check how many of your games will run out of the box, and how many require some additional steps on Linux/Proton.
For the ones not on the list you can check ProtonDB for guides and opinions from other Linux users.
Thank you. I have a relatively big GoG library, so lutris is already installed :)
So far loving it!
That is for later, but definetly will do some experimenting with the deck.
I dont know you but it means a lot :)
