  • Typically, the hiring decision is made by the person the position reports to. They’ll have a salary cap to adhere to, which is certainly too low, which means the employee who is willing to take the position is likely underqualified or incompetent. It may also be in the hiring manager’s interest to fill the position with someone less competent for a variety of reasons. You don’t want the candidate to be good enough to have the opportunity to job hop right out in nine months. You don’t want the candidate to be someone who would challenge your decisions and put your own job in jeopardy. Maybe you just need a warm body in a role immediately, fully intending to fire them when you find the “right” candidate, and then just never do that.

    HR just does the paperwork.

I was on a flight to Richmond, VA, many years ago. Delayed delayed, mechanical something. We finally board and depart, and right in the middle of the climb after takeoff, the plane turns real hard and heads back to the airport. People were kind of freaked out, they weren’t telling us anything.

Back in the airport, we learn that there was some issue with the cabin pressure. They thought they had fixed it, they hadn’t. Eventually, they decided, “Fuck it, we’re going to fly across the country in this 737 at 7000 feet.” Maybe a third of the passengers got back on the plane, I was one. It was cold as fuck.

  • We’ve had discussions about this, with and without our kids. Yeah, they need to be in the loop with their friends, and being in that loop can mean being exposed to some bullshit.

That’s always been the case, though. The additional risk of modern social media, I think, is that it’s always with you. One of the rules we laid down was to plug your phone in outside your room before you go to bed. That was relatively strongly enforced when they were younger, just getting started in that arena. They’re all essentially adults now, so we don’t enforce it anymore, but they sometimes still do it anyway.

It’s important to be connected, and it’s okay to be disconnected when you want to be.
