I don’t really like Gnome as I like to tinker with everything, so I use KDE. I also have a laptop with Cinnamon, which is also pretty good.

Depends a bit where you live, but my guess is on average € 45-50k, with whatever local benefits there are. Which translates to between 3 and 4k a month, depending on whether a 14th month is included. But this can be a lot higher or lower depending on the location.

He does a years worth of updates in like 3 or 4 weeks and then takes off for like 6 months. For me that’s acceptable. When he does get around to it, he pushes updates like the Flash on speed and fixes nearly all flagged issues in addition to adding new features that have been requested.

It’s called Smart YouTube now for Android TV. For phone android there are several options. I like Youtube NewPipe.

I use an HP microserver gen 8, which I bought second hand (300$) and upgraded with a better CPU (20$ from ebay) and extra ram (80$) and 4 2TB SSD’s (100$ per). I installed Windows server on it because I just wanted it to work in a way I’m familiar with, but a colleague of mine installed Synology OS on it. You can use the cd drive bay for the OS disk (with some tweaking). Since you already have the disks, this would fit your budget.

Reminds me of a script a colleague has where it would sometimes accidentally wipe the entire production folder on a server. I pointed out the risk in his script and explained how to correct it like 2 years ago, give or take. He said he did, but then last week it happened again because apparently he had several scripts like that and only corrected one.

Well, if your AV tells you there is a backdoor in it, don’t open it, I would say. There can be valid reasons for cracks to be flagged, but you can usually check what it does by uploading it to a sandbox or checking the hash on virustotal.

I cancelled my storage subscription with google in the past year, partially to degoogle my life, but also because in all those years they kept the price the same for the same amount of storage. It’s not like it was that much, 20€ for 100GB/year, but I have MS O365 family plan which gives me 1TB per account, so no real point in staying.

At one point I will have to demicrosoft I suppose, but I:m not in a rush. At least MS doesn’t convert my pictures to shitty quality.

I checked it yesterday as I was suffering through a meeting that should have been an email and the content quality on reddit these days is appalling. I don’t have an account anymore, so I was just browsing r/all, but still, it’s very noticeable compared to a year ago.

I can imagine they don’t want accountants or IT people looking at porn while they work though. Their own websites are probably not filtered, but whether the work is for a porn site or a car manufacturer, you prefer them focussing on their work. For a content reviewer though, it’s a different story.

This is way too accurate. With a buddy I even have what our wifes call playdates, where we are messing around with proxmox, containers and linux distros. We both have some old poweredge servers, laptops, raspberry pies and old phones to mess around with. Nothing useful has come out of that so far, although we’re preparing a lemmy and mastodon instance, so we’re getting there.
