$300 for the most important piece of software on the hardware that you interact with every day, sometimes all day, for years? That’s a steal.

And again, as an OS, Windows just works and Linux doesn’t. Even if you wanted to set things manually in the registry to disable the bad consumer “features”, you’d still spend less time than configuring a standard Linux install and it would be more stable.

Or… Read what I said. Spend the $300 on the enterprise license. No ads. No forced notifications. A single computer with multiple users at one time in a home environment is not a use case that would get any thought. Those that want it, can do it. And it’s easy, and free. Hyper-V is free and the licenses for the virtual machines are free too because the container host is windows. Lock an instance per output and voila. Recall won’t be coming to enterprise or server and if it does, it will be disablable. Just like forced updates are disabled in enterprise. Forced reboots disabled. Etc.

If you want that experience you buy that experience.

Yes exactly. I love Linux. I build embedded systems devices with it. I run it on some of my rack appliances. But I’m also not a blind fan boi.

Windows made leaps and bounds into stability with XP. And since then it’s been a slow cog into being an excellent enterprise grade OS even with users bashing it all sorts of ways.

Most (all) of the complaints except price focus on money grabs and features for the docile masses. Forced updates, reboots, integrations, etc. My 80 year old relatives can use it and you know what it works great when they type into the “computer question box”. Click start menu and type. It brings up their files, folders, apps, answers to web questions, etc. That makes sense to someone who doesn’t understand a computer. It’s not pandering to the IT folk, it’s pandering to Karen.

If you’re IT folk, you can just spend a little more money on the proper license and all that goes away. Or you spend some time hacking the registry and get it for free usually.

The only BSODs I have had in the last decade are graphics driver related usually when pushing beta drivers hard. My Linux OS’s have had way more stability issues with less interaction.

Windows with the proper license and configuration is more stable, more productive, and that configuration takes less than an hour once for the life of the machine.

In 2024 if you’re still bashing Windows for BSODs, stability, updates, etc, you’re doing it wrong. You can bash all day long for privacy violations and corporate greed but both of those are fixed with the proper version like Windows Enterprise. Costs more, but you are less of the product.

Even the shit laptops come with 256GB nowadays. Saving less than 0.5% of storage on OS optimizations that reduce usability is a poor tradeoff.

Heck even my phone has 1TB… Flash bytes are cheap. If you have a 32GB soldered down chip, buy a flash drive for the price of a BjgMac and voila you’ve 4x’d your storage.

I also used them for years, then everything blocked and deleted instantly. I have other homelab type friends, same thing happened. Again more anecdote vs anecdote. But if you google about hetzner and this type of activity there are bagillions of reddit threads.

After paying them about a grand a month forever, losing all my “safe data” and having to wait a week for even a response that just says “account has suspicious activity. Disabled”. Not a single response after that. And they had the nerve to charge my credit card again at the next payment period. Overall, truly scummy. And I will prevent everyone I can from ever engaging with them.

When hiccups happen, you would hope to be able to at least talk to someone and figure out what’s going on. If they don’t want to keep your business, fine let me get it out privately. But they don’t play that way.

If it affects system performance and gives me no noticeable benefit. Otherwise, flash bytes are cheap. I’ve got 30TB+ in my laptop. Why do I care if I have a 3GB OS or a 2.95GB OS?

I use World Stream for many of my storage VPSs. They have pretty cheap servers that can take 14x or 18x drives. So I use their super powerful Epycs plus storage and then they can do an internal LAN only network for your boxes at 10G. 140TB to 200TB per box, connected to the rest of my stuff at 10G.

Their support is opposite of Hetzner. Everything is communicated. It’s almost too much. You get emails that they’re updating the air conditioning unit in a different building. Your downtime is zero. I’ve had some questions on setting up my rack space with them, and engineers respond back, not sales.

You know what sucks? Getting your VPS shut off or account suspended. All your data gone in an instant, not recoverable. You don’t have access to the metal, and the metal no longer has access to you.

Hetzner is known for randomly boinking accounts. You update billing info? Whoops maybe shutoff. You login via a VPN, account disabled. Just randomly for no reason, account locked and VPS down.

You have basically zero recourse. Their support staff suck and the immediate reaction is suspend and delete. NEVER use them for anything you don’t consider temporary.

BBB is actually really good nowadays compared to where it started. I’ve got quite a few deployed hardware appliance designs with them baked in. The real time IO and subprocessor was a nice quick and dirty way to get a little psuedo FPGA

Most of the features already exist in extended Qi 1.5 standards. These are not new features, they are a consolidation.

And just so we’re clear, I’ve designed in and designed for Qi specs. I’m very familiar with the landscape. It’s a marketing nothingburger to appease idiots that don’t understand what already exists. You aren’t going to get actual new tech in this release or the next (which is already almost finalized just not public).

Xiaomi has demonstrated 200W wired charging (20V @ 10A) and 120W wireless charging which is really 134W wireless charging capable as dual 67W into a 2 cell battery charged independently.

It’s amazing and I can’t understand life with a 10W charger like apple people or “fast” 15W charging… I can plug in my big foldy phone after draining it on a long flight and get 50% added in 10 minutes. My smaller phone, 100% from dead in less than 15mins. And the batteries still last years. My MI 9 and 11 are still kicking. Those are 3 and 5 years old and abused daily with 100% charging at max wattage.

Lol, are you joking? I’ve been 50W wirelessly charging my phone for YEARS. One of my current phones does 67W wireless charging and 120W wired charging. The other does 50W wireless and 67W wired but that’s a limitation based on other design features, this is like the bottom spec acceptable now…

That house where I needed to transfer data was in a neighbourhood only had copper phone lines from the 1960’s for DSL and then coax cable. The maximum possible was 400Mbps down and 25Mbps up. Over the years it was increased to 800Mbps down, still 25Mbps down. I paid over $1000 USD a month for that shit internet. Because the only alternative was 4Mbps to 8Mbps upload.

This is a major metro area, 700k people. Starlink was a game changer. Not symmetric, but waaaay better.

There’s only so much bandwidth on the cable line and they’ve spent ages marketing download speeds as the measure. If they go from 400/25 to 400/50, 99.9999% of people wouldn’t understand and wouldn’t pay extra. But make it 425/25 and people will buy. Bigger number more better.

Just start the backup and wait 3 months. That’s not that bad. Are you losing access to the data soon? If not, just let your auto sync take care of it piece by piece.

I had an emergency situation where I needed to move the data and upload was 25mbps. Stupid cable companies not understanding why people need symmetry. It would take approximately a year of continuous upload and I didn’t have that. So I use 4 Starlinks, aggregated them to the cloud server with a VPN and now I had 225Mbps to 425Mbps upload. It took about 3 weeks but all the data was moved.
