The post itself is reasonable quality and informative so I find it upvote worthy. If a post is low quality or a shit post then I downvote.

To me the karma system is about quality. Not an “I agree/disagree” button.

The thing is… What alternatives are there? Signal can’t be trusted (on the very same website there is an article about it). I’m not using closed source alternatives, Simplex is kinda shady too tbh and I’m not even sure I could get anyone to use it.

I don’t like Matrix/Element either but sadly its the best open source chat solution we have.

FairPhone can run Postmarket OS, eOS, iodeos, calyxos and lineageos.

Some have longer support than others. Also you can buy separate parts for their phones and they are modular.

Having to buy something makes it bad isn’t really an argument. The very post you are making right now is made from a devide that has been manufactured at some point in time. If you start reasoning like that its better to start living in the woods with no possessions at all.

They are easily repairable and you don’t have to throw them away if the battery goes bad (just replace it).

How is that a bad thing? About 90% of other brands you can throw them away if the battery goes bad or they break.

Sadly I think most will just switch to bluesky so they can see the next disaster of enshittification unfold.

Also it doesn’t help most celebrities moved to bluesky as well. Then there is the fact you have to choose an instance on lemmy which scares most people away.

Just mentioning grapheneos in some subs could get you banned. Just mentioning luigi mangione could get you banned. Oh your post is falsely flagged as inappropriate? Banned, and good luck trying to appeal.

It’s become an absolute dystopian shithole. Lemmy isn’t perfect but at least if the host of your instance goes insane you can leave for another. And if you don’t like what you see you can choose to block it.

I still don’t get why people are moving to yet another centralised platform (bluesky is not truly decentralized).

No matter how much someone agrees or disagrees with the lemmy devs, the platform is decentralized and they can’t really enshittify it.

When a regular person makes something available that shouldnt be behind a paywall to begin with it’s stealing. When a billionaire or company uses ai to gather data from paid sources or just straight out plagiarises it’s just maximising profits.

Well… they went the enshittification route and they keep on censoring more and more. One of their latest stunts is that they’re going to implent an age check by making a video of you.

Yeah sorry but that is very privacy invasive. I’m all for trying to catch predators and shit but I’m not giving away my privacy for it.

As an added bonus they’re more and more ads so they can link all that juicy data you send them to a profile.

The problem with Matrix to me is that it is simply too unstable. I can open it up on any device and half the messages won’t load or are corrupted. Media won’t show at all. In contrast Lemmy has been super reliable and “just works”, so going from reddit to lemmy was no problem at all. And the communities are great too.

I just want working voice chat and group chats.

The entire streaming i don’t really care about. There are other apps for that.

But yeah as it is I’m probably better off using discord until the enshittification is so bad no one wants to use it anymore.

I’ve already settled on making lemmy my new home a long while ago. I like it here and there is more than enough engagement.

What i can’t really find an alternative for is discord… it’s going through the “enshittification fascism techbro” phase.

I tried matrix but honestly it sucks, Its so incredibly buggy it’s barely even usable. I’m still willing to give it a try since it seems very promising but the instability is a big downside.
