Agreed left unchecked it is horrible, one of the darkest pervasive elements of capitalism, used in a manipulative manner. We’ve reached astounding understanding of human psyche and are using that knowledge with advertising to control people’s subconscious. It’s disgusting.

Clearly you are not the target audience. For IT pros and tech enthusiasts regularly rebuilding machines and running numerous diagnostic tools from boot, the ability to quickly bootstrap a machines is a massive timesaver. dd is slower and may mean carrying around a lot of usb sticks, something these people all graduated from.
X86 configs were painful and fun. Knowing a wrong setting might destroy your monitor was the right amount of adrenaline.

Ubuntu. Started in the Slackware days, tried a lot of distro’s. Got used to debian commands/layouts etc. still happy to move to Centos for security focused installs. I find Ubuntu has a ton of support and general updates that fix anything I can find broken.
If you are in the USA. The Walmart onn 4k (20$) and 4k pro (50$) are amazing for the price. The remotes are really good too.
