I remember the days when bugs in x86 CPUs were almost unheard of. The Pentium FDIV bug and the F00F bug were considered these unicorn things.

Distributed computing would eliminate the water usage, since the heat output wouldn’t be so highly concentrated, but it would probably somewhat increase power consumption.

In an ideal world I think data center waste heat would be captured for use in a district thermal grid / seasonal thermal energy store like the one in Vantaa.

Of course that isn’t to say that we shouldn’t be thinking about whether we’re using software efficiently and for good reasons. Plenty of computations that take place in datacenters serve to make a company money but don’t actually make anyone’s lives better.

How about Deus Ex: Transcended?

I think that was the patch I ended up using my first playthrough (I’m away from my computer at the moment or else I’d check), but I might want to use something else my second time.

There are several games already that have some amount of mandatory ray tracing (with no other lighting technology to fall back to to replace it).

IMO the comment above yours is kinda like being in 1996, looking at Quake, and going “it doesn’t even look that much better than Duke3D for the massive performance hit polygonal rendering incurs, and you can do room-over-room in Duke’s engine anyway, I don’t see us switching away from 2.5D games any time in the near future”.

I can tell you right now developers are not going to keep doing all the crazy bullshit they need to do to fake light bouncing around now that we can just simulate it. Just like how devs in the 90s didn’t want to keep doing all the crazy bullshit they needed to fake the space being 3D when they could work with an actual 3D engine.

Developers are especially not going to want to keep working with two versions of lightning that work completely differently from each other.

Nerds don’t just want to teach people to drive. They want to teach them about the engine, the drive train, the underlying transportation infrastructure, and how to change their own oil and tires.

Maybe if more people knew how combustion worked and where the gasoline they burn comes from we wouldn’t have as much global warming denialism.

Similarly, if people knew how their posts were served though Facebook, what server costs are, and what their revenue model was, it wouldn’t come as such a surprise to them that their privacy was being violated.

But I think you’re right though. I’ve given up on trying to convince the general public of literally anything, at least in the US where it’s clear the cult of ignorance has soundly won. How can I tell someone that it’s better to use an electric car if they’re not willing to understand the carbon cycle? How can I tell someone it’s better to be vaccinated if they’re not willing to understand herd immunity? How can I tell someone that federated social media is better if they’re unwilling to understand what federation even is?
