  • Contact your doctor and ask to be tested for ADHD because holy shit you have this or something akin. Let me guess, you also cycle through hobbies constantly and have 100 projects you’re “working on” right?

Here’s a bit of advice: if you can’t even remember what all the tabs have in them or which is which or what’s important(which you constantly allude to when talking about searching through them)…NONE OF IT IS. It’s the easiest ADHD clutter cleanup method: if you can’t even remember that something specific exists and it’s just a giant generic pile, it’s all junk. If it really mattered, you’d have already sorted it or remembered it. Now it’s just hanging around as emotional baggage.

Dump all of it and if any of it actually happens to have been important, you’ll find it again if you really need it. If you don’t find it again, then you didn’t need it in the first place. And start using something to actually take notes and sort this shit. 2000+ tabs is insanity if this isn’t a troll.

I’ve been thinking this for awhile. When people say “AI isn’t really that smart, it’s just doing pattern recognition” all I can help but think is “don’t you realize that is one of the most commonly brought up traits concerning the human mind?” Pareidolia is literally the tendency to see faces in things because the human mind is constantly looking for the “face pattern”. Humans are at least 90% regurgitating previous data. It’s literally why you’re supposed to read and interact with babies so much. It’s how you learn “red glowy thing is hot”. It’s why education and access to knowledge is so important. It’s every annoying person who has endless “did you know?” facts. Science is literally “look at previous data, iterate a little bit, look at new data”.

None of what AI is doing is truly novel or different. But we’ve placed the human mind on this pedestal despite all the evidence to the contrary. Eyewitness testimony, optical illusions, magic tricks, the hundreds of common fallacies we fall prey to… our minds are incredibly fallible and are really just a hodgepodge of processes masquerading as “intelligence”. We’re a bunch of instincts in a trenchcoat. To think AI isn’t or can’t reach our level is just hubris. A trait that probably is more unique to humans.

  • You need to remember first of all what sites like reddit, digg, and now Lemmy actually are. They are link aggregators. The content is anything and every thing. Just link to it. It’s that simple. And if you feel it is in a place that might get removed, screenshot it, archive.org it, copy into an online Google Doc, and post that. There’s no reason we need 500 identical “How do I do X?” posts just to fill content. Do you want 500 posts clogging your feed about how to fix the same printer issue over and over?

That’s for perfecting illustrating what I’m describing. You think “this is it, this is the thing that’s gonna allow humanity to become enlightened!”. You’re hung up on the product like a bunch of other people, and not looking at the consumer. Federation won’t do shit to change human nature. That’s it’s own thing. Federation is just another social media tool in an already pretty large toolbox. You gotta teach humanity to work together, not just throw another platform at them and think that’s the fix.

I never said federation was in itself bad. People keep getting hung up on that and nitpicking. Just saying that it’s not the solution to humanities core problems that arise from our own instincts and behaviours. And that it won’t spur any revolution. It might be a tool used by the revolution, but it, in itself, will never be the revolution. People will be the revolution.

All the people debating me on Mbins history and various software are not getting the point: PEOPLE couldn’t agree on how to run the fediverse, splintering it into numerous groups(for better or worse). These same people won’t agree on the causes or solutions necessary for a massive cultural revolution as well.

To put it another way: Xkcd comic on standards

The fediverse wasn’t the solution to humanities problems. It was just attempt #284747737 or whatever. It was a bunch of high ideals about “if we give the power back to the people, this time it will be different!” while completely forgetting that reddit mods were just average people too until they became powermods and that whole system got corrupted.

The fediverse will never bring about the revolution. The only thing that can and will is the will of the people.

It’s named Mbin after Melroy. Dude filled Lemmy and Kbin with bitching posts for months. First it was the instance he worked on not listening to him so he started his own. Then it was people not joining his instance and only the “popular” ones. Then he got Kbin to agreee to let him work on the project and shit on Lemmy saying Kbin was the real future. But when that didn’t go his way either, he made Mbin while shitting on Kbin. I am well aware of the massive ego behind Mbins creation and it is a PERFECT example of “fuck you, I’ll make my own”.

ETA: oh yeah, and the time when he was supposedly a Lemmy developer too… Who left on bad terms.

Seriously, check the guys resume. He’s been supposedly attached to almost every federation project and has left all of them on bad terms when things didn’t go his way. Each and every time was “it’s not going the direction I want, so I’m starting a new version”. The exact point about splintering communities from my OG comment.

This is EXACTLY what will happen. Federation will just mean “fuck you, I’ll go make my own instance since you don’t 100% agree with me” creating splintered echo chambers that accomplish nothing because they fundamentally lack the ability to work with others. Federation will absolutely not lead the rebellion.

Just look how many Lemmy varients there already are. In the first few months we already had Kbin, Mastadon, Lemmy(and all of it’s instance variations) and then Kbin even split and also became Mbin as well(which was literally “I don’t like how they’re running Kbin and they won’t do what I want, so I’m starting my own” by user Melroy). Remember how the first drama was “which instances should we block on our instance?” on pretty much every single location? How everyone quickly set out to make a name for themselves by which communities they filtered out? How we didn’t even make it a month before instances were defederating each other?

Time and time again humans blame the tools they use instead of reflecting and seeing that the tool wasn’t the cause, humanity is. This is how humanity acts. We’re tribal by nature. This is what we do. You’re not gonna just fix that with some new software. It’ll take cultural change on a grand scale.

You can literally say the exact same thing with Windows. That’s how you Linux peeps feel, constantly yelling “why are you using windows! Stop having fun!”

Is windows perfect? Nah. But does it work most the time? Yeah. All the bitching about windows being shit and yet my 300+ installed games all work… Crazy…

How about just let people use what they like and shut up with the damn “my OS is better than yours” nonsense?

It’s posts like this, that even though I’ve used Linux in the past, make me immediately think “nah, fuck that, I’ll stick to windows. I don’t want to deal with those people.”

You’re more of a harm than help.

You realize that with CSAM, you need to know the laws of every country you operate in and the laws surrounding that, right? Do you know an international lawyer willing to donate their time for free to make sure youre compliant with every regulation?

What about GDPR? Similar rules in other countries?

And again, how are you gonna put copyrighted material on it and NOT get shut down?

And imagine the best case scenario: you create a free media server for anyone to use. Wanna guess how long it’ll take before you’re out of bandwidth? Video streaming is bandwidth intensive. You’re just gonna give all that out for free? Because remember, if you charge for it and a single copyrighted video is on there, you’re looking at numerous criminal charges for facilitating it.

It’s just not feasible unless you cram it full of ads or neuter it so much it’s worthless. Stop being delusional. If this was on a piracy community I’d be on board because they at least understand that what they are doing isnt legal and would take proper precautions to try and stay under the radar. You’d expect it to one day get shut down.

$3600 to build a media server anyone can access… Bro is delusional. Not to mention, how are you gonna put a single thing on it without breaking the law? The moment there is a single video there that you don’t have license/copyright to, the whole thing gets shut down. Especially if you charge for access, which you will have to, otherwise your bandwidth will be gone in a second. And you want to complicate this further by making it international.

Cool idea, but the logistics alone make this nearly impossible. This would only work in a pro-piracy community that understands that what they are doing is technically illegal.

Also, whatcha gonna do when the first CSAM gets uploaded and now suddenly you gotta follow legal regulations of numerous countries on how to properly report/sanitize the server?
