  • Yeah, no. I shouldn’t know the basics of active directory because I’m not at the administrative end of that tool, I’m at the user end of it. I work with wildly different tools where AD and domains are completely irrelevant for my job. It’s not even a siloed app, it’s the whole sector of data engineering that doesn’t touch systems management. That’s a completely different speciality and it’s as useless for me to gain experience there as is for my buddies that work in helpdesk and security to learn about distributed programming.

    I agree with your assessment that having a global view is important, but that’s not what helpdesk offers, that’s what working on a startup of your sector offers, a wide array of tasks around the job you are specialising in.

    Knowing how AD domains work doesn’t teach me shit about proper terraform structuring, what’s the best way to join multiple tables via spark, proper data manipulation, bash scripting skills (invaluable for my job and my buddies working at helpdesk know shit about bash).

    You mention security, but disregard that there are tons of Devs that don’t work on user facing apps, right now I’m working on automatic processes that access very well defined tables and write again in well defined places. I’m not the one designing the permission scheme on Azure or anything like that, what I need to know is how to analyse data, how to design proper ETL systems that are able to make and efficient use of distributed systems, and plan good validation tools of the coded systems. None of that interacts with whatever someone would do in helpdesk.

    Helpdesk has a good vision on security issues facing users and how the access and permission architecture of all the tools at a company works. Very valuable work, yet irrelevant for me to have experience on it.


  • There’s a big difference with help desk jobs and data engineering, for example. What’s the point of having someone that knows spark and sql solving tickets about permissions because some dipshit from middle management decided to randomly start removing permissions? (Sorry, it’s infuriating and I’m sorry for the people that need to reenable my user)

    “Moving up” might make sense in regards to people management within a company, but that’s not a very smart take when talking about technical fields. I get paid to analyse data and to propose, implement and test data solutions. That’s what I know, it would have been dumb to ask me to start at help desk. I started in a startup to get diverse experience of several tools,and then directly moved into specialised jobs in bigger companies.

    In fact, that’s my take, people should start at startups to get a wide range of experience before specialising, helpdesk jobs don’t really compliment a generic software developers skillset.



  • Oh, but I will. For it to be a fork of enby, it’s fucking amazing how bad the androidTV app is in comparison. The media player has improved,but its still way slower then using an external one,which is weird. It also freezes for a solid 5 seconds minimum every time I swap subtitles (while the vlc external player does it on the fly), and it makes me change subtitles every single time I load a chapter. Envy’s player lets the user set a preferred subtitle language and it makes an effort to preselect one. Not only that,but you can seal that on a series basis and you can select the subtitle before starting the video on the user interface.

    It has improved since I last tried it and at least it doesn’t die while transcoding or whatever, but the difference in performance of the android app/web version to the androifTV app is crazy. It would be better to adapt the android/web version of the app the manage a TV input than make the androidTV app actually useable…

    Besides that its amazing :)

    I rescind most of what I said because I just checked that the android app has TV casting (it didnt last time I checked) and the android app does have the preselecting and the player is waaaay smoother. Its comical that casting is a better user experience then using the native app but whatever.







  • 50k would be reasonable because the company then pays a big percentage to social security both for pensions and health service. I’m around that number currently, but if I account the amount the company pays to the government, not the money they withhold from be for taxes the money THEY pay to get for my salary, I would be around 75k easily. This is something a lot of people don’t understand when comparing US vs EU salaries, then go to the US and get taxed plus made to pay insurance and shit until they end up with less disposable income than me.

    Please remove the shitty EU salary interpolation. Thanks.








  • Then it’s your anecdotal experience vs mine, I’ve been using a better main drove connected to two NTFS drives, one for torrents and videos and downloads and another for games. 2 years almost like this and all games run perfectly fine. Souls games, path of exile (quite read heavy), league, hots, last epoch monstwe hunter… You name it, it has worked perfectly fine for over a year.

    Maybe it has improved since that happened to you idk, and I agree that threshold not allow NTFS for the main drive of, but for external ones it’s just silly.

    That is muy point, a lot of people that swap from windows probably have several drives for the HDD or just extensions, being able to access that stuff is key for a smooth transition.

    Also, im going to ignore you calling basic Linux commands to enable services, swap DEs, install and uninstall stuff, add drives by wirtting them in fstab as it has been done since the dawn of time… hacks, but as a side note, if the OS limiting you from fucking up your system is what gave you a stable experience… Maybe don’t fuck it up? BRTFS has snapshots, you can configure the system to snapshot every time you install stuff… Idk.

    A friend installed it and it’s been terrible doing tech support about it. All the obvious fixes don’t work because it’s immutable, all the obvious fixes like editing fstab don’t work, you need to use their hip programs and special commands to install things. The arch wiki that usually helps any distro doesn’t work and you need to almost exclusively use their own docs. Terrible experience.

    He has somehow managed to break the glorious immutable distro twice in two weeks while I’m happy with life in EOS for a year since the full swap.

    Oh, and bazzite doesn’t support NTFS drives. They say it’s because the NTFS conversion layer has issues but I’ve been living with the games ssd drive being a NTFS drive because I need space to swap it to brtfs and it works FINE. Games run at the same speed, the drove doesn’t lock, there’s no weird write issues or anything. Bazzite devs are cowards that don’t allow NTFS drives for dual booters either.

    Doing tech support for it for a month now, I’ve come to hate all the stupid limitations for the so called glorious immutable distro.
