  • Bingo. People can be so tribal about this shit. If you value privacy and hate subscriptions, jellyfin is you homie. It isn’t as hard to set up as some would have you believe (i’m a normie and have used it for years).

If you don’t give a fuck about privacy and don’t mind paying some creep to make it easy for you to access your own files, then Plex is fine. This is the camp some people are in, and it’s just as legitimate as mine. Life is about gray areas and compromise.

  • i was getting an unpleasant pop when I closed or opened programs that used audio. did a bunch of googlin and figured out it is some little auto switch that turns off the audio function when not in use, to save some infinitesimal amount of energy. I don’t remember the commands but they’re out there. try searching for linux mint audio pop.

“distrust in capitalism and our pseudo-democratic plutocracies, the profit motive to replace the human workforce, the reckless criminal-incompetence of its implementation, and apparent stupidity of the average hairless primate”

I have hair, thank you very much, but seriously get out of my head. The hubris these days is unbelievable.

A lot of people are making well-reasoned arguments about human nature, the nature of a dangerous tool, defining responsible use, and the challenges inherent in any sort of ban.

The points that look the best to me definitely include tagging, but I haven’t seen suggested any method of gatekeeping as to who has access to the means of dissemination of software. Because the damage by the tool is determined by the one who wields it, only people who have established trustworthiness should be allowed to contribute.

It is just a tool, but human nature makes it a net negative. There are a lot of tools like that, and history shows that once the cat is out of the bag, humanity just has to live with the damage that tool causes. There’s literally nothing that can be done to stop it on a large scale, but small communities can always dictate what they will tolerate.

  • I mean, I’m not sure the hysteria is completely unreasonable. AI does pose multiple legitimate threats and should be used responsibly, and not trusted with certain duties. We’ve also seen that the powers that be treat the world around them like a fratboy treats a drunken co-ed (it’s meant to be disgusting), and that the constant growth demanded by the shareholders leaves no room for ethics, morals, or big-picture thinking.

I use AI. I also built my own for simple tasks. I’ve had a lot of experiences with AI at this point, and its generous to say the pros-cons are a wash. The use-cases I and most normies see is AI expediting an already blazing fast enshitification of everything around us.
