I’d ask for the stupid AI scanning system to scan my car before I agree to renting it. Once they sign off on the ‘all clear’ notification from their AI scanner before rental, then I’d consider renting it … but after reading this headline, I’d probably just tell them, I’m spending a few hundred dollars more on renting a car from someone else.

Investors are like parasitic leeches to any business model. As soon as you add them, the business has to grow in order to satisfy the leeches who provide no benefit to the model other than to be attached to it. If you ignore the leech, they’ll drain all your lifeforce, so your only option is to satisfy them and feed them. Unfortunately, they are also ravenous creatures who are never satisfied. If you feed them a little, they’ll want more next time in an endless cycle.
Once you are infected by investors … eventually they will destroy whatever you created.

I don’t really care about images on here all that much … I don’t mind them being lost if I lose my instance.
Most of the images that are shared are basically ‘one off’ images for a quick gag or as part of a conversation specific to that moment. And often that conversation or interact is a ‘one off’ event as well. Which means it was all meaningful when it happened and when it was read the few times it was noticed over two or three years but then it is forgotten.
If there is anything meaningful I come across that I think is important to me or something I want to keep a reference of or keep … I’ll save it or screenshot it and put it away in my own storage or data.
Otherwise, I really don’t mind losing all those other images I had created over the years … they already did their work when people saw them at that moment.
The only reason anyone would want to keep all that data is to archive it for historical reasons … or to monetize it by collecting a bunch of unique data, images connected to real people.

Same here … I started off for about four or five years on OpenOffice until it devolved into some weird open/private organization and everyone revolted and it turned into LibreOffice. I held onto OpenOffice for a while and then realized the LibreOffice was more open source system … but you’re right, whenever I look up anything as an Microsoft alternative, OpenOffice is the first to come to mind.
Beautiful work … I wish my school had done that when I was a kid.
The great thing about it is that now you are helping to generate a new crop of kids who will learn how to use Linux. Sure, they will try to do stupid things on it like install games or figure out how to bypass things or install or uninstall … the great thing about that is that they will learn how to use the system in order to try to break it. It’s the same way I learned how to use Linux and probably the same way you learned how to use it.
You’ve advanced the computer department for those kids more than you know.
That’s one of the great things about switching to Linux … it forces you to learn something new and for kids that is a very good thing.
All those kids in the school that OP described were getting stagnant in a settled environment of living in Windows … now that they have Linux in front of them, they will go on to learn how to subvert the system under Linux. It’s not a bad thing in my opinion, it will create a whole crop of kids who now know how to fool around with Windows AND Linux.
I wish someone would have introduced me to Linux when I was kid.

Instead of mass migration, they should just institute small changes to small sections or areas or groups … just slowly erode the windows userbase over a period of about four or five or even ten years. Once it reaches a critical mass at some point … then you can just cut the cord altogether and change over everything and everyone.

If they are honest about what they are suggesting … the first step would be to be explicitly clear about who THEY are and WHO they represent.
I really don’t care that much about the technical side of things because I’m not that technically knowledgeable. However, I am more apt to trust the judgment or recommendations of prominent people in the industry (that are not corporately attached or controlled) … I would also trust public institutions or journalists or academics with a track record of social advocacy and wanting to represent people instead of corporations or businesses. I would also trust politicians or political advocates that mostly represent people and public institutions.
I really don’t put my faith in any one person no matter who they claim to be to just say they want to build something meaningful and give me no information on their background, who they worked for, who they represent or what kind of people or organizations they associate with. There have been far too many ‘good natured’ technocrats and technology people from the past decade or two who claim to say that they want to change the world for the better and then end up wanting to burn it all down for a profit.
Depending on who the group is … it is good to first do a thorough check on who the group is … it can just as likely be a group of scam artists that are riding on some nationalism band wagon happening around the world these days.
Same here … all I do is read most of the time … I’m only interested in reading about 2,000 words which shouldn’t take any data … yet Firefox will struggle under the weight of advertising, adblock, scripts, background links, preloading and all kinds of stupidity that I will not and refuse to use.
