  • The rumor is that the whole iPhone concept was actually the idea of one unnamed engineer at apple who worked on it in his spare time; apparently he had the idea at the same time as the folks at IG, probably it was kind of a natural evolution of the earlier devices. (You have to consider that the thing that made the iPhone such a success, the “app store”, was not available from the beginning. The first devices had no official way of adding any software, but people quickly found hacks and added a debian-like package management to it. From there the first custom applications spawned and only then Apple understood the potential of opening the platform to third-party developers.)

    Regarding the engineer, apparently he was fired by his supervisor for spending time on this “stupid” idea; but back in the day, Apple had the policy that everyone who was fired had to report to Jobs one last time, and then he showed him what he was working on and Jobs took it from there.

    Most personal blogs I stumble upon are written by people who actually have not much to say. The post timeline usually is like:

    1. I have started blogging
    2. <something about Linux>
    3. Why I moved this blog to Hugo

    <months of nothing>

    1. I now microblog
    2. <some “micro” post about Linux>

    <months of nothing>

    1. Microblogging is just regular blogging
    2. My thoughts on AI

    Back in the day, personal websites where actually interesting because they were made by people with interesting topics, e.g. some Italian grandma sharing her tomato sauce recipes, or a huge page with nothing but Diablo 1 hacking by some student.

    Nowadays it is 90% people who work in a 9-5 IT/software job, writing the same stuff as everyone else.

  • At the point where you are looking for a “cloud” provider you are already on a path doomed to fail. I like how he points out the “budget” version for “1 vcpu, 2 GB of RAM” at 8,60 € / month, when you get that at netcup for 3 € / month.

    Also, when you book a server for 1 month at netcup, use it 10 days and cancel it, they actually refund your money for the remaining 20 days. I have experienced that personally.

  • Any engineer fighting the use of LLM’s will ultimately find that their peers are achieving more in a shorter time then they are.

    How do you measure that?

    I am asking because I tried all the AI coding tools (copilot, cursor, claude code, etc.), even the paid versions, to find the utopia that doubles my productivity where lots of people are talking about. But everytime I find they take more time to generate code than me typing it, they rarely get things right the first time, they produce way more code than needed (which is much more to reason about) and all in all it takes longer to achieve something using “AI” instead of doing it on my own.

    The worst results are the ones that seem to be correct, but can only be found incorrect on closer inspection. For instances, a part of my job is to write data collection applications for sensors; those sensors come with a datasheet (usually 100 to 200 pages) that explain how to “talk” to the sensor. Sounds perfect for an LLM - throw the datasheet in, get a small C application out. But either I get something that does not even compile, or something that seems to collect data, but configures the sensor completely wrong. Debugging that takes more time than just working through the datasheet myself and program it myself.

    apple is scummy just like the other big tech companies but it’s one of the least scummy out there, especially wrt open source.

    Maybe with regard to open source, because that benefits them as a company - let others fix their bugs for free. But definitely not with regard to free software.

    The FreeBSD desktop exists, it is called “Mac OS”.

    Linus Torvalds used the GPL for his kernel, forcing companies to release the source code if they improve it and distribute it. The main userland was a lot of GPL licensed GNU software for a very long time, with a similar effect.

    The BSD folks, on the other hand, decided to give everything away, by using much more “liberal” licenses. Apple took the BSD base, bolted their UI on top of it and gave almost nothing back. That would not have happened if BSD was GPL licensed.
