I wouldn’t reject the label “AI Doomer”, myself. But I don’t have a strong position on utopia/dystopia when it comes to AGI.
Mostly because I think it’s so far away, that there’s a real good chance that we bet the farm on something much, much dumber than AGI.
Like a fancy autocomplete.

I agree, and I think your points line up with Doctorow’s other writing on the subject. It’s just hard to cover everything in one short essay.
They don’t want copyright power to expand further. And I agree with them, despite hating AI vendors with a passion.

I bought $15 of DOGE in 2013 and then the hard drive I had it on died. I didn’t ask for the drive back after getting it replaced. I sometimes wonder at what point I would’ve paid to have the data recovered so I could sell. I’m kinda glad I don’t have the option. Seems like such a silly waste of resources.

Makes sense.
These systems exist to sand off the rough edges of real life artifacts and interactions, and these are people who’ve spent their whole lives being treated like an imperfection that just needs to be smoothed out.
Why would you not be wary?

Eh, every distro is trade-offs. There’s not a straightforward “better or worse”.
The worst mistake you could make? Making it hard for you to change your mind later.
So take notes on what you modify, try to keep your data/configs consolidated so you could easily migrate to a new distro, etc.
And ideally have your hardware set up so that you can try booting a new distro without losing your existing setup.

I like her stuff because, no matter how you feel about crypto, AI, or other big tech, you can never fault her reporting. She steers clear of any subjective accusations or prognostication.

I think one of the most toxic things on Lemmy is the prevalence of judging normies for using incredibly popular services and ascribing it to a character defect instead of life just being too complex for most people to be able to prioritize exploring more ethical technology choices.
Because how to use it is baked into what it is. Like many big tech products, it’s not just a tool but also a philosophy. To use it is also to see the world through its (digital) eyes.
