  • But how does a VPN prevent those things?

Alone, it’s not the most effective, like the lock on your front door handle. Like the lock on your front door handle, it only keeps out the honest criminals.

Your Advertising profile, in the US the most common one is your Credit/Consumer Profile, tracks your ip address, browsing habits (through super cookies/app sniffing), and your overall fingerprint on the internet. This means Google really does know you visited facebook 12857192 times in the last year, it knows you searched your old crush’s name, and it knows the size of the sex toy you most likely are to buy based on how many seconds you spent on sex-toys.jesus thanks to google analytics plugins tracking your ip address back to the same one you used on google, the same one you used on facebook, etc.

Giving them a common, easily searchable, easily provable (without a warrant) data point to tie all their other data points is literally doing their work for them, and is making them wealthier than all their other business ventures combined. If you use a vpn and regularly change your ip address, fingerprinting is harder. If you use a slightly hardened browser and/or mobile OS, fingerprinting is harder. The less information they have on you, the less information they can sell to the government without a warrant.

This is like if you had a magic button to change the license plate on your car. Flock would be worthless, for the most part. Yes Flock collects a lot of other data, but if you cannot tie that data confidently to a single user, it becomes useless and worthless.

    –

Secondly, many VPNs do not keep logs, many do not run their software on persistent media whatsoever, preventing all possible warrant scenarios, even if they were in a country that was able to send them a warrant.

This prevents one data point in government tracking, the easiest one to explain to a judge. The easiest one to explain to a jury. If you make a comment on twitter that ICE doesn’t like, they will subpoena twitter for your ip, subpoena your ISP for your personal information, and then pay you a visit.

Guess what they have to do if you have a VPN? They have to subpoena twitter for your email/phone address/device ID/IMEI/etc, then, with varying levels of difficulty, all of which can be avoided using simple opsec tactics, subpoena all of those related companies, and then hope you used personal information like your personal IP when interacting with any of those services, and then pay you a visit if, with all this extra work ALL OF WHICH HAS A LAYER OF PLAUSIBLE DENIABILITY THE MORE LAYERS YOU HAVE, convince a judge to let them pay you a visit.

Given how quickly it is becoming illegal to be trans in the united states, gay people aren’t far behind, and honestly anyone brown should already be on a vpn and have anonymized online accounts when posting, you should be working on reducing your fingerprint-ability via every means. Given you can get a vpn for 5 euros a month paid through monero, there’s no real excuse not to have that easy extra layer.

  • Because unlike AI, there is actual money to be made in space. Elon has little to do with SpaceX besides the grand mission statement, and SpaceX engineers have said as much that employees mostly just humor him and then do the real engineering.

So yes, they will be going to the moon. Three years ago super heavy couldn’t get out of the atmosphere, now they’ve had several successful launches and catches. 20 years ago reusable rockets were a pipe dream that NASA gave up on because ‘it would be too difficult,’ now there are more Falcon 9 launches than any other rocket in history.

The business is there, the science is there, the engineering is there; and that means lunar resource hunting is in sight. and with that we have stellar construction, and then we have everything we need to start, at the very least, microgravity clean room manufacturing, if not asteroid mining, and if not potential colonization.

NASA is doing the science to take out risks for these things, Capital will capitalize on these things after the public pays for the finer points.

  • Hence my solution. You can get 2-4 TB drives for around $30 on ebay. Get a flexible RAID controller that can handle multi-parity Raid 50, ideally a second hand raid card. We’re at a total of $230 in at this point, assuming you have a windows 10 desktop lying around.

This is not a high data speed situation. If you have 6 or more drives you can dedicate two to parity and now you will never have data loss despite buying second hand drives. Effective storage capacity will be 16TB, which is more than enough to store 100 full series and a few thousand movies at 1080p or lower, and raid 50 gives a speed boost above what your controller will likely be able to handle, and way above what is needed for even a quite large multi-user media server.

Data storage is still incredibly cheap. You’re just confusing your needs and your wants.

  • What’s lazy is assuming chinese people have no ability for self determination and holding that racist belief to such an extreme level of nonsensicality that you believe literally the most high tech job in world history, one that is done 99% by machines because humans objectively cannot possibly do the work, one that is overseen by people with a minimum of one PhD, one where there is no non-degree holder in the building, is somehow done by slaves…

Because what, you saw a BBC or RFA or other NED article saying China uses prison labor as a form of rehabilitation one time so now no Chinese person can do something without slaves?

If you were to critically analyze any of your thoughts you’d be embarrassed to how ridiculous your thoughts have become. Replace Chinese for any other nationality and see if what you’re about to say makes sense.

  • And China as a government, absolutely loves the idea of everyone’s computer usage going thru giant corporations because the Chinese government owns part of every Chinese company and doesn’t need a backdoor since they have a set of keys.

This is your brain on American Government propaganda.

Like, why would they make something that they don’t want and would sell for less profit margin overseas?

To steal market share and relevance from Taiwan, removing the incentive for the US to continue to support its continual war against China.

Why build for a bunch of broke consumers when there’s a blank check for anything related to data centers right now?

Because data centers are temporary. Consumers will outlast AI.

Why would you ever hope China would save us from this?

Because they’re the only government attempting to do anything for the common person. Yes, they’re China first, but their official stance is to encourage global revolution.
