One of the hardest things to grasp is how someone is smarter than you. You can know that a person is smarter than you but understanding why is something that we have trouble figuring out. The default is that they know more than you, which is just information, but how do you make sense of someone being able to handle logic better than you or solve a math problem that you both have never seen before.

I use to go to my old company’s owner with Open Source tools and everytime he saw a website that was like web 1.0/Basic WordPress he was like how I am supposed to trust this. I responded that if the dev was actually trying to trick us it would be some React single page site that looks pretty, this guy just wants to make software.

My point is that you are trying to sell this to the wrong people. They expect the average corporate React site with gradients on cards, like what an Ai would make, because that was what their training data was. Anything that does not fit that will be shutdown.

The Anubus girl is pretty good branding because it is an expressive character and not some hollow corporate design. higher ups hate that, they want the simple bland buttehole designs that the Ai company’s use.

I am hosting 2 public game servers with my setup. My VPS exposes only those ports and I have my DNS on the same provider. That tailnet only has those servers and the VPS. The actual server boxes block all traffic except through the tailnet. The hard part is the reverse proxy on the VPS if you have never done it before.

Some games have query ports for stuff like that. Maybe check for one.

For people that want advice for finding an alternative service, go to the github repo and figure out the state of development. Find the answers to these questions: how many active developers are there? when was the last commit? does this look like LLM code? What do the issues and PRs look like? Remember that we don’t want to have to do this again in 10 years, so open source and decentralized are major points.

I was using a etke as a hosting service for a while but it was a bit expensive and I wanted more control. I set it up on my homelab with a VPS running a reverse proxy and like it a lot more. I believe I deployed it with someone’s Ansable playbook I found on github. Make a matrix.org account and play around with it. I hate the Element client though.

For built in listeners use ncat, but nmap package is not always included. If you are on Windows find some listener Poweshell script, it will be under 10 lines, with Test-Connection. When I was a SysAdmin one repeated problem was UDP traffic was not working. When you tested the TCP port it would work, verifying that the connection is there, but UDP for a variety of reasons is problematic.
