You know how those Trump supporters thought we were supposed to be really offended at “Fuck Biden” but no one gave a shit because even most Democrats were never really cheerleaders for Biden?

Even people who hate Apple know that Google is a piece of shit too. We aren’t (generally) Google cheerleaders. You don’t need to whatabout all the anti-Apple comments.

I’m not as in the loop these days - are some Linux pundits still trying the “maybe MS isn’t as bad as they used to be” line or have we learned again now?

I think my point is kinda that the whataboutism poster I blocked might have needed a reminder that the idea that “no one cared until it was Trump” is just another pro-Trump attempt to rewrite history, and untrue on the face of it, because it has never been difficult in the age of MS dominance to find knowledgeable people expressing these concerns.

However, and going back to my original comment and my underlying frustration that I’ve entertained this whataboutism for this long, like all examples of whataboutism it’s nothing but a waste of time where we all circlejerk about how of course we all cared about it even before Trump while simultaneously failing to call out the original statement of “no one cared until Trump” as the obvious bullshit that it is, on top of being whataboutism.

So now I get to walk away smugly congratulating myself for how thoroughly I’ve exposed the whataboutism and the bullshit, meanwhile all the time you and I spent thinking about and typing this could have been spent thinking up creative methods of civil disobedience, or otherwise doing something more valuable than impotently demonstrating what an inane point was made in the first place.

I’m holding my breath for the pinephone to be ready for primetime. I check in on it every so often to see what the current buzz is.

I haven’t used a Microsoft product in my personal life in twenty years. One of the primary reasons for that is that I don’t trust them with my privacy. People (gestures broadly at the tech space) have been expressing similar sentiment for decades.

We are not a monolith, and some people have cared about these things while others have not.

For those who only just began caring, I find it entirely reasonable that when the top of the pyramid wasn’t Trump, someone who there are a great many reasons to distrust, they weren’t as worried about it.

If you didn’t care about it until recently, only you can answer the question you have asked.

All of which is far more of an answer than the sheer whataboutism merited.

I’m guessing the admits part and of course Trump is the current (quite jutified) bogeyman.

My assumption for many years now has been that the answer to any question involving MS giving access to your data is “yes.”

It’s almost like everything Republicans claim to stand for is a hollow lie that exists only to justify their greed and the harm they inflict.

When a company gets criticized for everything it does, its decline increases significantly.

Gives me hope for the future of MS then! Maybe they will decline themselves out of dominance.

The deeper I’ve gone with Linux over the years the more Windows seems (aside from the obvious privacy concerns and generally being trash corporate citizens) like an intentionally convoluted and overcomplicated mess.

Well, I can tell you how Jellyfin differs from a directory full of files, but I can’t help you with understanding that other people have different preferences and desires than you which are neither “conditions” nor “addictions.”

You’ll have to make it to that one on your own.

You are imagining how to use a computer filled with video files.

Now imagine having your own personal netflix available on a variety of devices, using just that one computer full of video files.

Emby

Jellyfin exists because Emby was only open source until it wasn’t convenient. Some of their own devs pointed out they were violating the license, and their response was… non-ideal.

So Jellyfin was forked with the last fully open-source Emby code.

At least that’s my recollection several years down the line.

I decided then that no amount of headache from Jellyfin (and let me say that I was an EARLY jellyfin adopter AND former Plex user) would be enough to get me to use Emby. (Because things like that are important to me, though I realize they aren’t important to everyone.)

And reading this thread I’m apparently a super-genius because I have my Jellyfin behind a reverse proxy and serve it to my elderly parents with a simple login and an app they were able to install, and never found it to be a headache. (Which, if I’d read this thread only, I’d conclude was just not possible without voodoo magic)

No headaches along the way, and whereas Plex had already begun the march to enshittification when I left, Jellyfin has done nothing but steadily get better.

Anyhow, longer answer than intended, but I’d go back to Plex before I’d go to Emby, just on principle.

Odd, since my Jellyfin sits behind a reverse proxy.

I wouldn’t want it as a primary monitor but I’d love love love it as a secondary.
