united states barely saw 1% growth year over year and are projecting that growth to continue to slow.

India has nearly 3x the users of the United States. the u.s. is still second because it’s the country it started in, but it’s not far ahead of the 3rd and 4th place countries. India is an extreme outlier.

unfortunately they don’t break down the age demographic by region, but I’d bet that if we specifically look at daily active users in the United States the age demo would skew much older.

so, it seems like it’s similar to what many fast food restaurants have been experiencing lately. the growth opportunities in the United States dried up so the decided to push like hell everywhere else. i bet the growth they saw in India over the last decade was explosive. probably bigger than anything they had ever seen before. bigger than when it was still growing in the u.s… meanwhile they project that over the next decade in the u.s. they’ll see maybe 8% user growth and that’s pretty optimistic.

so we probably won’t actually see much Facebook marketing in the u.s… the only way they can capture more u.s users is by buying more apps, like when they bought Instagram.

this does seem to imply that the part of the world where Facebook has become a fact of life is very specifically India. I’m sorry to hear that for them.

  • sure, but like 90% of the porn on there is just to funnel people into the creators only fans these days. this could be good for those users. if they offer better terms with a lower cut than only fans i could see it taking off. there’s no discoverablility on only fans. they basically have to advertise elsewhere. and no one wants to go to a whole different website to make a whole different account when they’re already mid jerk. additionally, not many people will go to a porn site to make an account if they aren’t already looking to get off. removing that barrier for people that already have payment info on Reddit could turn it into a 1 click transaction. something that people can impulse purchase with their horny brain before the real brain catches up. if this takes off well enough they could take a lot of only fans’ customer base.

i don’t really like it, but it makes some amount of sense. personally, i think the quality of the porn on Reddit has done down almost perfectly in line with the rise of only fans. this would only serve to make it worse. Internet porn was at its best when it wasn’t monetized and the people making it were doing it because they felt like it and it probably got them off. now it’s just a job for most of them. a job that they often get real sick of real quick when they realize the amount of work, organization, and maintenance it requires to actually be successful on the platform. people that just did it for the love of strangers seeing them have sex didn’t have those burdens and could just upload what they wanted when they wanted. i guess it’s just like any art. it’s better when it’s not commercialized.

on the other other hand, i do think only fans and the democratization of the porn industry has been good for creators. the porn industry was exploitative and very unhealthy for the actors. they often did meth and downed copious amounts of boner pills to make it through long shoot days with numerous angles and shots. but idk… i never liked that kind of studio porn anyway. it’s just annoying that the replacement for it, which i also don’t typically like has taken over so much of the amateur space.

shit sorry… this became about the porn industry as a whole… i have many opinions on it because I used to work in the paid porn industry on the broadcast maintenance side. but yeah, this Reddit thing could work out if they don’t completely fuck it up.

  • obviously a news show isn’t going to feel the same rewatching it. that’s not the point lol.

that would be like saying it’s dumb to preserve newspapers in libraries because it’s not going to feel as good rereading the “Hitler is dead” headline. people don’t look at old news to have a good time.

boy was it silly of us to preserve that kind of thing and it totally never comes in handy/s

that’s not even what people are upset about anyway. comedy Central mostly makes entertainment programming that isn’t news based and can still be enjoyed whenever. believe it or not, comedy Central has a lot of content that will stand the test of time. especially when looking at their stand-up catalogue.

this is the destruction of a library. a digital one, but a library none the less. that’s what people are mad about.

but you’re right. we should just dump all of our old movies and shows. they’re worthless moldy junk anyway… 🙄

  • yeah, I’ll agree. the tech communities in there are not like that. it’s the political ones.

an example: they’ll say something off the wall about the Ukraine war and American support for it, you’ll reply with something that mentions the Americans that support and don’t support it among many other things, they’ll dog pile you for using the word “liberal” with the common American definition because apparently linguistic drift is illegal. theynever get off the subject and then never actually tell you their definition and how it differs.

that’s every political discussion with anyone from .ml involved. if it was just their own communities it would be fine, but it’s that they go out and do that with every community that doesn’t defederate.

imagine it this way; what if “the Donald” had broken off Reddit later and made one of the largest lemmy instances. they were perfectly cordial when you were in their funny dog pictures community, but they constantly act like trump supporters in every political thread.
obviously we’d all defederate with them. very few world even question that at this point.

that’s what this is. they’re just loud, and extreme, and annoying on this one subject. we’d rather not see the Linux main community hold us captive against excising the problem.

  • to me it was more the straw that broke the camel’s back. every rude and unreasonable interaction i have in here is with someone from .ml. it’s not even about their politics or beliefs, they’re just not pleasant to have around.

the second you try to engage them they throw the real arguments out for pedantry about definitions and using that to call people dumb instead of actually having meaningful discussion about ideas. they’re the worst kind of “it’s not my job to explain it to you, Google it” people too. like, i get the mindset, but it’s just not going to change anyone’s heart or mind. it’s not how you actually win an argument.

every person on Lemmy.ml argues like an annoying 14 year old atheist that just discovered Internet arguments and the think whole Internet is Christian. they’re just shitty to be around and basically never add anything meaningful to a discussion other than “you’re wrong and dumb”

  • it’s one of the only commonly known messaging platform to most people that:

1: isn’t owned by a company that many people hate, even if they don’t know much about it.

    2: isn’t platform locked and doesn’t discriminate.

3: doesn’t require money or verification to use.

i can see how it’s kinda settled out this way. whatsapp never caught on in the u.s. because everyone here was happy with sms and mms when the rest of the world was picking up Whatsapp. from what i understand that’s literally just because texting was cheap in the u.s… now people want more than mms, but apple is being apple about it so we need a third party app. by this point Whatsapp is owned by Facebook and the “privacy” of it is openly mocked by the average non tech person. everyone hates Facebook so the idea of willingly adopting another Facebook messenger that you’re not already on seems crazy. anyone that would accept that is just going to use Facebook messenger instead. anyone that wouldn’t will find something better.

Snapchat has no big controversies. no one knows who owns them. they don’t really try to be more than a messaging platform. i can see why people would uncritically choose it as their default. i bet it’s big among the kids who don’t play that whole blue bubble iphone supremacy game, but don’t use discord either. so i guess the non nerdy kids that aren’t elitist dicks. that’s who I’d guess uses it amongst the youth these days.

edit: before the suggestions come, I know these aren’t good solutions. I’m just theorizing why. getting my friends on matrix as best i can…
