Me, standing on the shore with a life raft next to me, watching Intel drown: ehhhh… do we really, though…? They tried to cancel a contract with amd and sue them in an attempt to kill the company in its infancy; they bribed major OEMs when amd was first to market with a 1GHz chip, first to market with x64, trying again to kill the company, this time through starvation; then they sat on their ass for 15 years with essentially no progress, just collecting cash for the most minimal of improvements… I’m sure I’m forgetting a ton of other shit the company has done, playing dirty at every opportunity. It’s been about a decade since I took a deep-dive into this.

I don’t have a (monitary) horse in this race, but as this has progressed, with the side addition of their chips literally disintegrating, it’s been very… enjoyable, validating, to have stuck with amd since finding out about all the bullshit intel has, would do, and continues to do, to try and control the market and remain in control, no matter the cost. Karma may, finally, have caught up with them.

  • Oof. I have my VMs getting backed up to another machine so theoretically (untested) I should be able to recover with less than a day of data loss (very minimal for this box). The annoying part would be getting it hooked up to a monitor and keyboard, since it’s under an end-table in the living room.

This is the first issue in like… 15 months? Hopefully it stays rather uneventful.

Yay, it only took 2 hours and the help of an llm since the upgrade corrupted my lvm metadata! Little bit of post cleanup and verifying everything works. Now I can go to sleep (it’s 5am).

Wasn’t that bad, but not exactly relaxing. And when my VMs threw a useless error (‘can’t start need manual fix’) I might have slightly panicked…

  • Well you see, it’s like, this whole “solar” “energy”, I done did tried to run my double-wide on two of those things with that U-B-S cable they come with, whole thing cost me around 30 dang-o smackaroos, and the little light was on saying it was “charging” all afternoon, but as soon as the sun went away, the light went away! Now how does a light know if it’s daytime or not? Damn cia alien shit, just you wait. Then after a little while, it stopped charging my air compressor I use for my lady doll. Worst 30 bucks ever, all I got was blue balled and confused. Harbor Freight won’t take em back either, feller was giving me a weird look when I tried to explain with my doll. Poor bastard ain’t seen a pair of tits before or somethin.

I started a petition on truth social to bring back the sun at all times, so that myself and others don’t get scammed by this “energy”. Has over 64,000 signatures, mmmhm. It’s all the damn libs fault, stealing our sun. Who’s idea was it to have it go away anyway? Buncha dumbasses.

(fuck I think I lost brain cells but hopefully I created a character that everyone can see clearly in their mind. and yes I know geothermal [or whatever they think it is] isn’t solar, that’s part of the joke.)

  • (venting frustration)

I’d argue with the installer point - if it’s in the repo, and it almost always is for anything a newbie would be using, it’s actually easier. Search, click, done. BUT…

Drivers though, specifically companies not supporting Linux drivers, is shit. I’m helping a friend transition to Linux and am dual-booting myself so I can help with the actual os available for troubleshooting. And fuck me, sound drivers fucking suck ass on Linux. It’s because Creative is a bitch and won’t make Linux drivers, but also apparently literally nobody is both running a creative card and anything above 2.0 speaker setup. I have two creative cards, a decade apart, neither works with my 5.1 speaker setup. FL and FR work, the rest are some sort of fucked and come from an incorrect speaker(s). One of these cards is like 15 years old now, and nobody has noticed or rectified it. And if I reboot straight from windows to Linux, the sound is mangled. I need to shut the system down and boot it cold. Then FL and FR work. Hours of troubleshooting last week got me absolutely no progress.

Then I need software for my Logitech g903 (there is 3rd party software available) that does profiles and switches on the fly based on the application in the foreground (crickets).

Then there is an issue where if my monitor goes to sleep, when I wake it up I get patches of graphical artifacts. On the 2D desktop. Every few seconds, for about a quarter of a second. Random location each time. Random size. I’m on a Radeon 7900 XTX, which isn’t terribly new now. But the friend I’m helping, no issues at all with drivers or hardware. An older 6700 XT. But come the fuck on.

Both of us are on bazzite (I suggested it so they wouldn’t nuke the system as they learn) so it’s just Fedora silverblue with a few tweaks, not some out-there distro.

And, shit. If you need cellular connectivity on Linux, as far as I can tell you’re fucked if you don’t go the Ubuntu route. Debian doesn’t work, Fedora doesn’t work, Mint doesn’t work, I went down a rabbit-hole and tried a dozen distros. I ended up with kubuntu, since I wanted kde, but I tried anything just to see what would work. This is on a modern ThinkPad, still under (extended) warranty. I thought ThinkPads and Linux were supposed to be like this holy-grail of free-as-in-freedom computing? Ugh.

So yeah if you have a basic system, aged a bit, nothing special, it works well. Take one step outside of that perfect-scenario bubble, and paaaaaain.
