    • I’d strongly advise you to stay clear of elementaryOS, at least as a first step. after you figure things out with a more vanilla flavor, feel free to revisit it. there’s enough challenges with taming that hardware with vanilla flavors, you don’t need additional ones
    • these aren’t important messages, if you want to look at what’s happening, press “e” on the GRUB menu and remove quiet from the switches edit: those are EFI messages, that’s not linux stuff. make sure your USB drive is GPT formatted and after you’ve flashed it verify there’s an efi folder on it. reboot, press and hold Alt until the menu shows.
    • you’re booting with Nvidia graphics. those are abject horror in the best of cases, and yours (GT330M) is beyond saving. you should disable it as you’ll get nothing but grief and run it on Intel HD graphics only, here’s a primer.

  • yeah. create a 8gb partition on the new drive, format it as fat32.

copy the ISO’s contents (not the ISO, its contents) to the 8gb partition. shut down when done.

optional, disconnect the windows drive so you don’t fuck it up.

power on, press whatever the key is for the boot menu for your UEFI. it should list the installer as a boot option. hit that.

final step, equally important. when the GRUB menu appears, press “e” on the menu item and find the linux kernel switches (where it says “quiet splash” etc) and add toram (debian/ubuntu) or rd.live.ram (fedora). this will boot the image to ram. so when you start the installer you can select wipe & use whole disk.

    suerte!

edit: this assumes you’re doing it on a EFI/UEFI system, which is any board/laptop after 2012.

  • fine learning experience, but this thing does nothing you’d use your TV for.

the cheapest and best solution is to grab a busted-up laptop from your marketplace. broken screens, keyboards, missing batteries, whatever, you won’t use none of those things. make sure it’s skylake (6th gen) or newer for hardware video acceleration and on-board LAN and HDMI, the rest is unimportant. you’ll have an insanely powerful and power-efficient platform that you control 100% of and can tweak to your heart’s desire, expand, fix, etc. I’d be surprised if you can’t find several for under $40, power brick included.

my go-to setup is auto-launching jellyfin player in TV mode with macast running in the background (DLNA sink you can send youtube videos and the like). since you’ll have computing power to spare, this can also be a server, whatever you desire.

this used to be a job for raspberries, but them things are insanely expensive now and necessitate ever more expensive shit. please don’t even joke about letting noname android boxes loose on your LAN.

  • ixnay on anything but the vanillaest of the vanillas and that goes triple for bazzite and friends. you don’t want “intriguing” shit left behind to take care of pops, that’s a thing for you to play and experiment with.

your solution is already staring you in the face: the ubuntu you left behind persevered even under those circumstances. either fix it and update it or install a fresh one, with a tweak here and there. and don’t touch nothing else…

  • you can rest assured I know the difference; it was completely useless, I didn’t go “problem solved, let’s nuke the fucker”. I had posts that received a barrage of downvotes and I let 'em be. had posts where the conclusion differed from what was originally intended and I’d let them be as there was value in the resolution. this was none of them things, no chance anyone would find this useful.
