Last update force the logo on newtabpage (If I need to use CSS for basic change, where are we going?)
Everything I want is some customization on Top Toolbar ( zoom, AddOn, favorite link) … so no Brave, no Zen.
And 20+ shortcuts easily added and removed and visible in 1 normal screen on newtabapage (no Edge ).
No chrome (because fuck google)
Is waterfox still a thing? LibreFox?
I absolutely love Floorp it’s basically all about configuring the browser exactly how to want it
Yeah It seems I didnt gave it a fair chance, as I didnt find the manager to get rid of some tab.
But I just finished switching everything to Librewolf, and it is good enough so far. I’ll remember Floorp next time someone force some "design " layout on me
Just gonna say if you’re not happy with the level of customization out of the box for Firefox. You should look into CSS tweaks. Lets you change up a lot about the browser without having to completely switch.
Most CSS tweaks also work on forks as well. I’m personally running LibreWolf + Lepton.
Edit: Should also include to this list of them https://github.com/topics/firefox-tweaks
Waterfox
I use LibreWolf with UBO and Brave on my Linux.
Brave is for logins, LibreWolf is set to dump all browsing data when closed.
I avoid Brave cause of their history of shady practices like injecting affiliate links in the URL and crypto bloat. If I may suggest, you may still manually add your login sites to the cookie whitelist in Librewolf(‘Manage Exceptions’ under ‘Cookies & Site Data’) and simply continue using it.
You may wish to reconsider using Brave. The devs are not very nice people.
I don’t consider the personality of the developer when choosing an app or service. If I did, most likely I couldn’t use technology at all.
Brendan Eich is a world class ass for sure but no other browser comes close to Brave’s performance on android.
If you have a lot of options around that work just well enough, it would be especially more than easy to look into the personality of the developer too. Also, on top of being a homophobic ass, the Brave team also injected affiliate links into the URL at one point. I don’t know why anyone would ever trust them again.
There’s Vanadium and there’s Ironfox on mobile. Works decently fine. Even if it happens to be that Brave has some performance benefit, which I doubt is significant if at all it exists, I’d rather take a performance hit than use Brave.
Brendan Eich made that donation in 2008. 17 years ago. People change and he has stated that he regrets his actions.
A few months ago Andy Yen, CEO of Proton, made some comments on Twitter that many took to be pro Trump.
Mozilla took payouts from Google for years, yet they are still a respected privacy company.
Wait long enough and the leaders of any foss project will disappoint.
Vanadium needs more features before I can even think of using it.
I’m already using Ironfox, it syncs with Librewolf. I will not log in with a Mozilla browser on Android.
//People change and he has stated that he regrets his actions//
First step to change is acknowledging what they did was wrong. And then let the actions speak. While I could find an article on his personal blog on March 2014 about how he is going to commit himself for equality, he didn’t mention anything about acknowledging what he did was wrong. I could not find him say he directly regrets for his action that he did in 2008 by donating to an anti-marriage-equality proposition.
If you could provide me a link where he does so, I’d immediately change my mind.
While I was trying to find evidence of his regret about this, I also found that he’s an advisor on Palantir, which is a giant red flag.
//Andy Yen, CEO of Proton, made some comments on Twitter that many took to be pro Trump//
Of course, he exactly sounded like being pro-trump. While I pretty much agree with most of the anti-big tech stuff I’ve read on Proton’s blog, I can’t wrap my head around the cognitive-dissonance people have about his outright support for Trump/Republicans. And instead of apologizing for being wrong about his statement that “Republicans stand up for the little tech”, when it was in fact not the case, he doubled down on it. Heck, I even agree with him about his details on how democrats like Chuck Schumer try to block the anti-trust bill, but even the bill he cited that got 16-6 votes for in support of, all the 6 that voted against it were Republicans. And he wouldn’t respond to these comments after a point.
He’s been ruthlessly moderating Proton subreddit eversince after the backlash and he made Proton stop posting on Mastodon, citing there were not many people in it, when in fact it had more followers there than on Bluesky.
Again, until you can show me that Yen has apologized for his statement, it would make him seem pro-Trump, when even an idiot can see that Republicans/Trump don’t care about the little tech or little businesses.
//Mozilla took payouts from Google for years, yet they are still a respected privacy company//
Yeah, ideally, you don’t want to rely completely on big-tech, but as long as it doesn’t affect user’s privacy, I don’t see why not. And Google is also probably doing in its own interest of not being ousted for being a monopoly in the browser space.
//Wait long enough and the leaders of any foss project will disappoint//
Yeah, there have been a few. I was kinda excited about checking out hyprland, but oh boy, not after I learned about the developer.
//I will not log in with a Mozilla browser on Android.//
Same. It lacks proper sandboxing or site isolation is what I’ve heard. I only use it for casual browsing.
I dump all data when close, except some selected login by using the addon: Cookie Autodelete https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/cookie-autodelete/ (very easy to use: you put it on the top bar, and when you dont want the login to delete, you just clic on the addon logo and change the behavior for that website)
You don’t need an addon. Just click the padlock and turn on “LibreWolf: Always store cookies/data for this site”.
nice I didnt know about that. will try
Zen is the new cool kid on the block
Compact mode for life. I can’t go back to other browsers now, they’re all too cluttered.
I tried Zen and I didn’t like it. I have a big enough screen, I like everything being a click away, I even turned on the menu bar in LibreWolf. I also didn’t like the forced tabs down the side. I guess this is why we have options!
I think Zen is the one that force toolbar on the left for some “core design” reason?! huh
the tabs are forced on the left, but you can move the toolbar back to the normal position.
If you want a different experience but still want to stay on firefox, try the default browser of your distro. If it is firefox, you can try librewolf, waterfox and other forks.
Thanks. I installed Librewolf, and it is perfect
Floorp maybe? not really shure but it is quite customizable.
yes waterfox still exists
Floorp
thanks for the recommandation. Looked cool. But the forced right Bookmark bar , is a no. I dont care to have 50 bar. I just want the 3 stuff I use on top toolbar: bookmark, zoom, extension and the home, back, forth, reload
Dont get why is so complicated to allow to move everything on the top bar. But I’m not a browser programmer
I tried setting up Floorp to how you described your preference in your post, and I think it’s doable! If you untick the browser manager sidebar box, that makes it go away and you can use the top bar in peace.
I guess the sidebar thing is becoming a trend in browser with even regular firefox implementing an option to have it.
How are people using it. Based on Brave, it is like only 5 buttons… so why not put them on top? I glad people get the option to add all the sidebar they want, but not at the cost of preventing putting their buttons on top
