I’ve seen many people talk about how they really like using YouTube ReVanced as their main way of watching YT on their phones.
I’ve also seen people talk about NewPipe aswell. Personally, I use NewPipe because I can’t stand the YouTube app, and I don’t want to set up ReVanced for it. I just want something that works.
So to you Lemmy users, which do you use and why? What is about your choice that you like?
I use both in a balanced way.
I save a lot of videos in my custom private youtube playlist. And those logs is saved within my Google account automatically. Nothing happens if I uninstall the app itself by mistake or clear its data.
Whereas in Newpipe, it doesn’t have a gmail account integration feature. Even though, it does have its custom playlist builder setting and also have the option to backup the entire streaming activity and playlists as a whole.
But everything’s gone if someday, by mistake, the app gets uninstalled or its data get cleared without backing up in prior.
The only 1 big reason I use Newpipe is for it’s external download feature. I can download a video as external .mp3, .mp4 and in other formats.
To be fair, Newpipe does almost all the things that Revanced YT provides.
But I just don’t happen to be the kind of guy to create a manual backup every 24 hours just to keep track of what I’m watching. At least, not for now.
Maybe when I won’t be needing to update my watch time with my playlist, then I can fully shift to Newpipe. But Until then…
I use Grayjay. Good UI, no microg and multiple streaming sources. I only don’t like how big this app is.
I use ReVanced because I like having my subscriptions and having unknown content recommended to me. Even though the algorithm has been especially shitty in the last few months. Maybe I’ll switch after all.
Algorithms are the sole reason I go for Google products :(
Unpopular opinion, but I would much prefer having gold algorithms on Lemmy as well
I use Grayay. I’ve found it more consistent/reliable than NewPipe and, like you, I don’t want the YouTube app on my phone (even if it has been modded). Also, I just don’t believe using cracked/modded versions of official applications is a good long-term solution to problems. ReVanced works really well but it is basically the last choice I would make, for that reason.
ReVanced is just the way to go for me. Good UI is a requirement, and sponsorblock and return YT dislike integration is a must have
I’m using Tubular, a NewPipe fork.
Based on this thread I’m trying out PipePipe
I have used pipepipe exclusively for years and have had almost zero issue with it.
Simple. Consistent. Lightweight.
i don’t like having microg in the background so I use pipepipe, seems to work well enough. (and i don’t watch much youtube)
Ironically I use ReVanced for the reason you don’t: it just works.
NewPipe requires a bunch of setup, and I’m too old and low on dopamine to bother trying to figure it out.
Don’t like Youtube’s design choices, too bloated and the little you can configure is all over the place. NewPipe from the little I used it was a bit noisy, but felt like it better used the space than YT, and also had integration to a few other services.
I use NewPipe instead of Vanced for a few months now. Aside from a bug where it can’t load large playlists, it’s fine, I had no problems with it, and this large list loading bug is also fixed in a random development build apk, so that’s fixed.
The interface is… not the most convenient in some places, but it’s no worse than the official YouTube app.
But it’s good. If you don’t need your account’s recommendations or don’t want to comment, it’s perfect.
I did the change, because for a while I had to use a… weird little Android phone (Qin F22 Pro) and NewPipe was my only option to have YouTube. Since then I’ve got a different phone, but still stuck with NewPipe, to me it’s more than enough on the phone. Mostly I use it for listening music in the background, but not exclusively.
It’s an interesting plus that it can handle SoundCloud and BandCamp too.
One of the pipe forks for me. One apk, simple to install, update and use. Also no accounts so the platform is used very differently. With pipe, I search for a video or playlist and piss off when its over. There’s no customized feed of videos I might be interested in, so I don’t get swallowed into it.
NewPipe or a fork. I personally use PipePipe. The interface is much nicer than anything else, no over the top “modern” design, just simple and functional.
Grayjay is hands down the best
Not gonna matter soon. Google is shutting down sideloading (essentially) in a few months or however long it is. To sideload (unless you have a non-google rom), the dev will need to supply ID and get google’s permission to upload to the play store, but you can sure as shit bet that apps like newpipe won’t be getting approval, because that directly affects google’s bottom line.
i like revanced cause i can log on and use it just like the official app but without ads :)
Unless it’s YouTube Music, is that still broken?
It’s fixed!
